Still wondering whether its worth buying this ship at 28000 steel less discount voucher, i only play Subs in Coop but i am yet to own a premium Sub yet.

Was holing out for a German Sub but as far as I know its going to be that Tier X  really hoping for U 47 or U 96.

More interested in Tier 6 or 8 Subs

I'm planning to welcome the Gato to my Port, as soon as I can save-up enough steel.
By that time, my coupon will have renewed, ah reckon.

I've seen the Gato played here & there, especially when the Convoy Attack/Escort temporary game mode event was going on (months ago).
In the old forums, @ArIskandir wrote some interesting posts about the Gato and his experiences sailing her.

Is the Gato "over-powered"?  I don't think so.
Can she sink ships decisively?  Yes, if she's played well.

As for Tier-6 or Tier-8 Submarines, I suggest the U-69 as a "first submarine".
She's stealthy, decently fast and maneuverable (for a submarine) and has a forgiving amount of dive-time.  Her deck-gun is a welcome option, if needed.
After getting the hang of playing a Submarine decently, one can branch-out to try the US Navy and British submarines for comparision.
They each bring a "flavor" and a a recipe of capabilities & trade-offs to keep things interesting.

Tier-8 Submarines are more capable, but they're also in battles wherein more ships are equipped with Hydro-acoustic-search and Radar consumables.

I have it and in my personal opinion its nothing special compared to other subs at tier 10, i thought it going to be a deal braker but then it feels even weaker then tech tree subs.

Okay, Gato is a submarine for players who love to play Torpedo destroyers. Where most other subs play the pings in one form or another, Gato is all about the standard dumb fire torpedoes where you line them up the way you would with a torpedo destroyer, although with Gato, your stealth capability is even greater. The homing torpedoes on Gato are meant for other submarines. I hope that helps.

Gato is top of the line sub that is most definitely OP if you are using it right.  If you don’t believe me, check my stats with her - I only play solo randoms.

Also homing torps are not only for other subs.  You need to learn how those work.  When used with pings those torps will absolutely murder cruisers, but they are also very effective at sniping pretty much anything at short engagement ranges when you use them without ping, including destroyers and low health BBs, due to sheer speed/arming distance.

I like subs, but there's no way I'm touching Gato unless I've already been playing Balao for some time, and consistently well to boot.

Currently about 1/3 of the way through Cachalot, so that's going to be a while! 🤣

Which admittedly, should have probably been the standard for ALL subs. And the homing gimmick should have been once in a blue moon 😛

Of course, such changes for the better would probably require a complete overhaul of subs and how they function and how survivable they are and whatnot. So Wargaming ain't gonna do it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I was about to ask to see the replay, and then remembered that this forum doesn't support replay files.  🤔

Replay not required, but ill play it a few times and throw you a couple soon®. Revolves around assassinating key ships then doing whatever you want on the flank.

A lot depends on the other team sub player.  I ruined many games for enemy Gato players, especially when playing on U-2501.  That thing can counter enemy sub like no tomorrow.

Personally, I wouldn't waste that amount of Steel on a submarine. I dont think Gato is that great. I would much rather recommend the standard silver T10 German sub which most seem to think is the strongest of them all with that 9 km sub radar and 14 km torps. Ive gotten a lot of red subs killed with my radar in this sub. But then again, its not a premium.

I traded so I got the Japanese T8 premium (can never remember the number names....) and that is really strong but have poor conceal.

I think steel should go for any of the other extremely strong/OP/fun ships in that category, and maybe try the T10 German one instead.

One thing to note about the Gato (and the Balao) is the number of loaders.  Once you fire off the initial loads, you will have to double the listed reload times for the torpedoes to get full reload again.  This means that you will actually have fewer torpedoes to fire than other T10 Subs (other than Balao) than you might think.

Otherwise, the Gato is a good Sub that is what a T10 Sub should have been.  The only problem with it is it matches up against the OP U-2501.

I play both Gato and U-2501, and I find Gato much stronger of the two against surface targets.  Having said that U-2501 is better in anti-submarine role and has easier time if enemy CV has a hard on for subs.

Personally, I find the huge dive time and full loading of torpedo tubes alongside the high speeds underwater to actually make the 2501 better at surface combat as well.  It might not hit as hard per torpedo and the lack of rear tubes is a definite disadvantage, my own impression playing them is that the 2501 simply does everything better (except torpedo range and selection on commanders).

Gato has unique properties that allow it to cripple key targets by delivering 10 high damage torpedoes.  U-2501 just does not have the firepower to delete ships as fast as Gato, I once lost a game by simply not being able to sink any of the three enemy BBs on my flank with U-2501 fast enough after I killed opposing submarine.

Gato can absolutely demolish flank once there is no CV or submarine to counter you.

I played both quite a few times, and my stats show that Gato overall is more capable in turning the battle around.

This was my festive token battle with Gato. I dev struck the enemy CV, and I wasn't even trying to hunt it until I was chased into it. My flank literally melted both teams, leaving only me and a DD, and the DD chased me right into their CV!

I also sank a Petro. No homing torpedoes were used. Strong sub, would definitely recommend.
