WG removed the carrot because they don’t need testers on the live server.

This is rather shortsighted... if WG wanted more people to play "Airship Escort" some small incentive (like "Combat Missions" or "Community Tokens") would be just fine...

I don't need any special incentives in this case, just normal XP income so I can grind my commanders in a fun game mode as opposed to Randoms ...

I thought the live server was their testing grounds?! You mean they actually test new ships before they release them? 😁

That was "before the divorce" I suspect.  One side took all of the "growth" skill and the other side is still taking classes in cloning and gimmicks....

It's been their new business model for a while now....  It echos some Historical comments that, in the end, didn't work out too well.

"Let the eat cake" comes to mind.  And, here we are discussing what was "our daily bread" (good rewards vis-a'-vis nothing or junk).....  History must not be studied where they are.....cause, we sure are repeating what absolutely failed several times before....

In the past when we had community token rewards for special modes like Airship Escort, Convoy, or the April Fools duck event WG was using the live server and these events as a test bed for new mechanics (either inherent to the game mode or more widely applicable things likes mines).

In this particular case, Airship Escort was previously in testing as a new game mode, so they wanted a bunch of players in the que to collect data, hence the CT rewards. When they were happy with the results, the mode left testing and was added to the regular Randoms rotation.

WG then removed Airship Escort from Randoms. The stated reason was that it didn’t change the meta the way they wanted it to, but I suspect it was actually declining Randoms numbers because the mode was a poor fit. WG is now simply bringing it back as a temporary “variety mode” similar to what they recently did for Asymmetric Battles - they aren’t making changes or testing new features, so they don’t care how many play it (as long as it’s enough to not screw up queue times). Thus, from the devs perspective there is no reason to offer players incentive (CTs) to play the mode.

Wg doesn't bother to throw 1510 community each week to attract people to play their special mode, I don't bother to do extra for it.

 

They cut short of the temp. mode anyway, it used to be full patch last year, but now it only lasts 2 weeks.

The Public Test Server sees the "test ships" sooner, I think.
Then the test ships make their appearances on the live server for further testing.

The carrot for me and my friends is running ridiculous divisions unique to that mode since you can bring up to 5 people.

It turns out that when you have four Colberts shooting at the same time, the game stops rendering the shells until just before impact.

IIRC they did some changes to that game mode so I thought it would be prudent / OK to have some small reward to have more players play it and test it... but alas...

Imho there's hardly a reason to play a mode where the matchmaking isn't fair (Tier 8s see T9s and T10s, but never T6s or T7s) and there's no variety in terms of objectives, if there isn't some extra reward for it.

At least Asymmetric Battles actually played differently: taking on multiple bots might not be super-exciting, but it demands different tactics than playing against humans, and it is more relaxing, too.

I do not need community tokens as an incentive to go into this mode, I enjoy this mode. I am glad that WG listened to the players and brought back Airship Escort as a separate temporary mode. I just wish it would be available for a week longer. I really appreciate the variety of modes on offer right now, and Airship Escort in particular.
