Some are Themed, other are quite literally random. Over the weekend at Megacon in Orlando, someone purchased a mystery box that contained alot of items from Star Wars, Star Trek, and Dr Who. Nothing like 100% so far. Hmm... never encountered any other type of stars when it comes to Japan except the army five pointed star and the merchant marine eight pointed star.
