Subs: Anger, revenge and smiles, but really just anger

Yesterday I was in a Co-op battle grinding Brindisi, and at the very start a Montana player began ranting in chat about how terrible WoWs is, WG sucks for putting in a bot CV and sub on our team to get their mirrors on the reds, cancer ships, the usual thing you might see in Randoms.  I replied that they were just bots, and sink just as easily as any other ship type.  Montana then went on a non-stop rant, f-this, f-that, I am WG's bootlicker, etc.  I even sank the sub for him, but nothing besides rage for my trouble.

So then later I took Repulse into a Random Battle to try to finally get a win for that ship, ended up with a queue dump sharing the battle with 3 subs and a CV, only 10 ships per side.  Queue dumps are almost always frustrating, but one with three subs (including a division) is extremely so.  I played well enough (top of the team, sank the red CV) until the end when I made a mistake and got sunk by a sub.  At that point we were going to lose anyway, but to see the three enemy subs all on the top of the scoreboard once the loss was in the books just made me angry (our three subs were all near the bottom of the scoring).  I am not normally a vocal sub critic, since I kill the sub a lot more often in my torpedoboats than the sub gets me, but dang, I did feel bad about the engagement when it was me in a BB vs two subs.  Maybe raging Montana was right.

So today I am back playing Kagero, stuck into a Tier X random battle against a division of U-4501 on the red side.  While dancing about the middle of the map (Shards) trying to spot things for my team and planning my return to B cap, one sub pops up right next to me.  I had no idea he was coming, but he dove and I immediately dropped him from full health to dead with one pass of depth charges (both racks got me 10 hits).  I then went to take B cap, and as I was finishing, his pal also popped up right next to me and I did the same thing (9 hits killed this guy).  I quickly got a lot of support in chat from my own team, and even from the red team.  Lots of folks were happy to see subs get sunk.  It made me feel really good again about fighting subs.  After the battle (a very nice win for me) was over, I looked those sub captains up and found they were below-average players, one of whom was in his very first U-4501 battle.  That then soured my mood again regarding subs.  They were really just noobs who totally botched their attacks on me--I had no idea they were coming until they popped up right next to me.  Had they been any good, either of them would have sunk me instead.  So yeah, I can wreck the skill-less sub captains who seem to make up most of the population today, but put a sub in the hands of a competent skipper and all that type's advantages really come out to get you.

Glad to hear you had some happy moments amidst the food for thought & contemplation.

Personally, I was reminded of this quote from the character known as John Rambo.

"John Rambo "I always believed that the mind is the best weapon""

The ship type matters less than the competency of the player, to my way of thinking.  🙂

I had an even happier moment early in the battle.  I have been running into Rhode Island test ships often these last couple of days, at least 3 times, all on the red side.  In case you did not know, as I did not and found out to my chagrin the first time, Rhode Island is a battleship that has radar.  Ooof!

Anyway, there was another RI on the red team this battle, and I wanted to warn my own team of its radar at the start, but I fat-fingered some keys and sent it in all-chat.  I got a bunch of sarcastic replies from the reds, including a Tashkent who said "Kagero sucks".  Fast forward to later in the match when I hit and sank the unspotted Tashkent with a torp from a salvo I aimed at a Napoli who subsequently turned away and was himself nowhere near the torps when they got there.  Cue the hooting of my own teammates who ripped Tashkent to shreds in all-chat.

When I sank the second of those U-4501, I myself typed into all-chat, "it feels great to sink a whole sub div, especially in a Kagero which sucks".  Good times...  Oh, and the RI stayed on the west side of the map while I made hay in the center, so I never felt the sting of his radar.

Rhode Island needs that radar, she looks so sad haha. Good to see you had some enjoyment in some of your battles.

Keep in mind that those advanced submarine players will often go into long periods of silence before inserting suppositories called torpedoes into your ship

I mostly play operations so I am missing out on all this fun.

In fact, it eliminates some of the worries. I am a battleship player, so I often have to guard against such an invisible assassin.(SS)

Once in a while, the "Airship Escort" mode is randomly selected by the matchmaker in random battles.

Never really fancied that one either.
