For a fraction of the US workforce (i.e. those that work for the government or certain industries) and students in some locations, it is indeed the weekend. Today (11/10) is the observance of Veterans Day (11/11), so a small subset of the population has a 3 day weekend.

Friday is start of weekend, Monday is tail end of weekend.

Though nowadays it's weekend all the time.
