I pulled Rhode Island this morning from my last Mega container of the season.  I have played two Random battles with it.

OMG.  This thing is a monster!  It has wicked HE and a decent rate of fire.  Nothing TOO outrageous in that regard, but the AP is darned good, too.  This puts your targets in quite a predicament.  If cruisers or battleships are broadside, punish them with AP as usual.  If they get sassy and try to angle, switch to HE and slap them with good HE alpha with a few fires as salt in the wounds.  Pity the destroyer that doesn't realize how accurate your 8 or 12 gun HE can be.  And that you have 9 km radar for 40 seconds.  And she reloads in 22 seconds.

Her armor isn't spectacular so you may eat some damage.  But, the heals cool down quickly.  She is pretty fast (and has a speed boost) so if you do get into a bad position and start eating too much damage, you may be able to relocate.

I thought I had been playing this game too long to be impressed by much, anymore.  This thing has done that in only two games.  I may play it all morning!

How did this slip under my radar?  I don't see it in the Armory, so I assume it is not currently available for acquisition?  When was it available?  What currency did it sell for, and for how long was it available?

I know next to nothing about this ship, but WoWS Wiki pages tells me it was released with update 13.0, in one of 46 random bundles in Armory.

GZ on the ship too!

Edit

Oh, almost forget. A fun and completely irrelevant fact: one of my father's uncles had a chicken farm on Rhode Island. The... place, not the ship.

Beacouse it was for 120 euros straightforward to buy.

I got serious flack in battle chat for bringing that ship into the last T10 brawl. "That's not a ship you bring to brawl". They shut up fast when I burned down the entire enemy team. 🙂

Limited availability and expensive to guarantee acquisition. She is effectively on the ultra-banned list when it comes to Santa crates, and I considered myself very lucky to have her drop into my port this Christmas.

She shoots fast, she shoots straight, and if you're good with the guns you don't suffer much from them only being 14 inches. I knew how strong and desirable she was, but the first couple of battles in her really drove it home.

That's great to know considering I just opened my mega's I've been saving (22 of them) and low and behold, the RI was the first of four ships I received !

Now, I don't play US ships very much but......  Sounds like an OP winner !  Thanks for the info !

I was not an English major at any of the Universities I attended...  And, a career soldier who had no clue how to write a paper over one page....  Yes, I do have some "moments" typing answers...

You are correct and thanks for the clarification !  Who would have thunk it possible to get that ship (and a total of nine ships this holiday season !!!)

The only reason I bought Santa Containers (and got it). Easily the best T10 BB

I went for this:

Some but not all people I asked said that you can make this a secondary ship, but I decided to go all-in on the main armament, and also on the ship consumables because you have the option to take radar (9km) and you have a speed boost. I gave up concealment to do it, but as a mostly co-op player I figured the bots will mostly be seeing me anyway and it's a price I'm prepared to pay.

Speed boost and radar modules are available for slot 2 if you want to burn the coal for them, but I see the radar as a situational thing, to flush out round-the-corner ambushes and to ambush Italian ships that think they can hide in their smoke (not to mention Essexes, Yorktowns and Shinanos).

If you're at all uncertain, leave her unfitted and try various builds in the next PTS.

I got lucky and pulled this ship from a mega as well.  I have 21pt Halsey, but he is secondary oriented.  I am thinking of dedicating a captain for this ship.  I have tons of them in reserve and over 14 million CXP burning a hole in my pocket.  What might be a good recommendation for an all-armament captain fo this ship?

I’ve been running my Vermont captain on my new RI in Asymmetric Battles. I don’t see any reason the build wouldn’t work just as well in PVP.

My recommendation:

Rhode Island’s 5 degrees/second turret traverse rate is perfectly fine, so GtG and MBM2 aren’t needed. You can (and should) take radar rather than spotting aircraft, so APRM1 in slot 3 gives a very usable main battery range of 24.4km. That’s more than enough, especially considering you can drop your concealment down to 12.3km (that’s the same as tier VIII North Carolina, btw).

Captain skills are pretty basic. I run GF on most battleships, but it’s especially useful with 14” guns at such a high tier. Brisk works really well with the concealment, and CS is the best use for the last point because you have two handy consumables that benefit from it.
