I need advice on Research Points as I've never used any before.  What are they for? How do you use them?

Save enough of them by resetting lines and play all the ships in them again till you reach Tier X and then repeat the process, to buy ships and upgrades from the Research Bureau, every 3 months you can reset one line and earn 2 times the usual amount of research points for a reset. I suggest watching this video, i found it very helpful when i started with the Reseach Bureau, and if anything is unclear just ask us in this forum, there are guys here who can explain these things much better than i could.

Still unsure if i should get her or not, my luck with sniping BB's hasn't been great so far and she's the most expensive of all the RB ships, that doesn't make this decision easy.

Presumably, you've found the relevant section in the Armory [sic]? Have a sniff around in there, and see if you can identify any particular ships that you like the look of. RP ships tend to be slightly eccentric in some way or another, but some are quite worthwhile e.g. Vampire II is excellent if you dig DDs, and YOLO is from the RB too.

You can also pick up the various Legendary Upgrades (or whatever they're called these days), but - IMO - this is a bit of a waste of RPs if you still have any worthwhile ships still to get.

My feeling is that the most useful thing to apply when dealing with RB stuff is patience: your primary route to getting the points is regrinds, and you get a double-up every few months (look in your tech tree to see how long before the next one).

image.thumb.png.9ced21baf60f33a72e8306c7ec60e83d.png

Unless you're extremely impatient, the points you get for a non-doubled regrind aren't usually worth the effort and resource, unless you're on a timer for some reason (you might want something for a particular game mode, or mission, say).

You can also make regrinds a lot less painful, by means of using the same line(s) for repeated regrinds; if you keep a captain for each ship you'll play, you end up with a better captain for each run through, making life easier. Of course, you can free-xp your way, but I can't really advise on that, as I usually play everything from T5 and up (at least in part).

Finally: you can spend RPs on signals, but that is an utter waste, so I would advise strongly against it.

All I can say is that I like sniping, whatever the ship, but I really don't like having to do it with Slava. Other than that, try to get your hands on relatively recent reviews, meta wise, before committing to anything.

If

“This ship is a type I don’t do well in” + “damn, it’s expensive, too”

doesn’t add up to a staggeringly easy decision, then you’re thinking about it wrong.

It s a ship that profits from opportunities and enemy's mistakes. But it needs a competent team to hold the lines, and lately Christmas happens more often than that. It can not hold a flank or push as good as other BBs.

This is why I did not get it.

My first Research Bureau ship is the IX Illinois Doubloons.

The next ship on my Research Bureau shopping-list is the X Brennus Doubloons.

I'm not interested in the Ohio because ...
1.  She's like the popular poster-ship for the Research Bureau, everyone has her and getting her would make me "one of the herd" (which is sort of like becoming an Honda Accord owner?)
2.  The Ohio's play-style is a "known quantity" (perhaps too well-known?) and isn't interesting, to me.

That said, I don't mind people enjoying their X Ohio Doubloons.  To each their own.  🙂

What... is wrong with having a Honda accord....? Our one time neighbors had a brand new one, it even had a display informing you if any of the doors were open.

Heh.  Nothing particularly wrong about having a Honda Accord.
They're popular cars because they get the job done and are reliable while looking decent.  It does that well-enough to become "boring".
So Honda Accords are a "good choice" and they are a popular choice because it is a "good choice".  Which also makes them a "boring choice".  😉
The "one of the herd" phrase is from an article I read some years ago that was rating cars on their capabilities and style.
The Honda Accord was described as capable, yet lacked the style or quirks.  Buy one and "become one of the herd".  🙂

Complete list of ships (NA server) here:

https://armory.worldofwarships.com/en/category/paragons/ships_paragons/

I have the Accord - Um I mean Ohio, and Sevestapol. My next ship is likely Vampire. I probably won't get Druid (no torps, no smoke AP only) despite mainly playing DD's. Yolo Emelio is one of the strongest T9 DD's (especially for brawls and Ranked) although I would agree that T9 Matchmaking is horrible, which is why I haven't picked up many of the T9 cruisers and DD's. Illinois is awesome for picking up "Battleship main battery hits" when they show up in mission chains.

I also have the Unique Upgrades for Des Moines and Gearing, since they get used in clan battles a lot. If you like Italian Battleships they you should get Columbo (tech tree) and her unique upgrade (19,200 research points) which make her one of the most powerful T10 BB's for competitive (KotS, Clan Battles) in the game.

Ship wise are you looking for strong or unique?

Strong hard to beat Ohio, unique Paolo or Illinois.

Otherwise there are some "must haves" for Unique Upgrades depending on your game mode of choice.

Here is my sheet for those, but my comp/coop/randoms feel may be slightly off these days.

Well, after looking at ships in the RB (I already have Ohio, Colbert, and Paolo Emilio, which may have been picked up in a drunken state), nothing really called out to me. So, I decided to go the "Unique Upgrade" route (I currently have UU for Petropavlovsk, Harugumo, Shimakaze, Moskva, Minotaur, and Yamato).

The Sicilia in the RB just did not do it for me, so I decided to go for the UU for the Columbo.  To say that this upgrade puts new life into this tech tree ship is an understatement.  It really makes playing this ship enjoyable in battles.

For me, getting UU upgrades for my existing ships at 19,200 RB points versus dumping up to 60,000 RB points on a single ship makes a lot of sense.  Plus, there is no way I'm willing to use RB points on the T9 offerings again.

I try to use every x2 opportunity there is an reset my Harugumo so I pretty much never have that ship available to play. So far I have gotten these 4:

image.thumb.jpeg.fe25c6f90c6e78cb5b7f5844bf6d85d5.jpeg

Ohio - Really strong and nice US BB but not really my preferred playstyle and to be honest I would never ever play this over Wisconsin now that I gotten her so Ohio just sit and collect dust.

Colbert - Hard for me to get consistent great games in tbh. If you can hug an island you can melt down half the enemy team but it only takes a stray plane to spot you for a couple of seconds and a Vermont will Nuke you.

Vampire 2 - Just really OP DD, strong cap contester, best Firestarter, it has almost all.

Illinois - A Des moines on a BB hull. Feels like a US version of Mecklenburg but not at all as strong

Im really not that interested in any of the other ships tbh, none of them feels fun or unique enough to grind for.

My first research bureau ship is the Illinois.
The fast reload is useful when doing missions that require battleship main-gun hits.
Most of the time, the guns feel under-powered when compared with "normal" Battleship guns, though.
The Iowa class hull has good speed, even if it takes a lot of ocean to make a turn.

Bottom line?  I think the Illinois is a fun ship, even if her guns could use a bit more "punch".  🙂

From RP I have got until now: Ohio, Slava, Illinois, Siegfried, Colbert.  Next pick will be 99% Sicilia 🙂  Right now have around 30k RP and nothing in regrind.

EDIT: From all of them, Ohio is my "all arounder" - in ranked.
