Coal Ship

Thinking to pick one up. I have everything T8 and below except Pozharsky and Stord 43 and not interested in either, nor the available DD's. Anybody have a Tulsa? Any good? I have a Yoshino B so not the Yoshino. And isn't Azuma just a T9 Yoshino minus torps? I have Agir. Kearsarge? Not a big hybrid player but I heard her guns are decent and you can do your own spotting. 🙂 Any rumor of interesting new coal ships to wait for?

At the moment Tulsa will be underwhelming, but once the balance adjustments being mentioned in a blog go live it might end up being quite decent. Basically it should be getting destroyer dispersion curve on its main gun shells in the near future. Currently only having four guns usable when angled in can result in some less than optimal salvos.

Azuma is Yoshino minus torps and a little less armor, but way better economic returns. If you can play a decent game in the Yoshino expect at least half again the payout with the Azuma for a similar game.

Kearsarge has a very respectable broadside, and yes she can do some self spotting if you are good at locking guns aimed in the direction ahead of time of launching your flight. The hump in the middle can definitely cause you grief because its every HE slinger's favorite damage printer.

And nope, no rumors of new stuff. It was only just recently we got the Anhalt and Stord '43 added after a long period of no new coal ships.

But basically if you are considering the Tulsa, I'd honestly suggest the Salem over it.

Azuma is tier for tier stronger than Yoshino, she is also a very good credit earner. She has no torps, but Yoshino’s torps rarely hit anything.

Kearsarge is one of the few ships where the hybrid playstyle works, but she is less strong than her reputation. She is preferred by unskilled players who snipe from spawn and launch planes. She’s a mid range ship by design, long range salvos are frustrating, because the shells take long time to arrive (longer than on Iowa or Montana). Also she is not suited for brawling because the broadside is pretty much exposed.

I don’t have the Tulsa, because the playstyle is similar to Des Moines/Salem, and I’m not a fan of island hugging. If those are your favorite cruisers, and need another one on T9, then go ahead.

Interesting new ships are not landing for coal anymore. In the last few years, we had ex tech tree (Kurfürst), ex free XP (Ægir and co), ex event ships (Brisbane and co), gimped premiums (Anhalt).

The coal ships in WoWS are basically like a thrift shop, where among a lot of junk, you occasionally find something shiny.

The best use for coal are the trade in events, where you can exchange your T10 coal DD for a decent ship (like Karl XIV Johann, or Minegumo) and buy the coal ship back.

Thanks folks. I don't NEED another ship, did fairly well so far for the Christmas event. Between the anniversary and holiday flakes I have some coal burning my pocket. So no Tulsa. I have Salem and enjoy her but don't need another with less guns. Azuma, I'll take another look but I think I am going to just wait awhile. Trade in event? Forgot about that, I got my K XIV Johann that way. Again, thanks. Merry Christmas and a blessed New Year to you.

An understandable sentiment in random battles.

In Co-op, my Yoshino has a 28% torpedo hit-rate.  So, I figure the torpedoes are useful, in favorable circumstances.  🙂

But don't the bots in coop get some divine revelation about the torps? You probably have to be really close, if that's what you mean by 'favorable circumstances'.

There are times when I am glad that the 'Bots are courageous and enthusiastic.  🙂

Kearsarge is a horrible dillhole ship in divs. Solo I prefer battleships without a huge tumour as I always feel that it is my job to take space and get shot at and others will spot.
