PSA - What is "Overmatch" and how does it work

Recommended Posts

An Overmatch guide from Streamer/CC Trenlass. Good thing to understand for new and old players so they dont cry "Cheat" all the time. Also imagine WG actually putting out a guide like this....

So, some high caliber BBs in this game will pretty much overmatch most bow tanking cruisers. Some Cruisers like Henri IV can overmatch the bow on other cruisers like Minotaur.

So playing crusiers for example it is good to understand which BBs that can overmatch you're armor. Its also good to know what cruisers comes with and ice breaker which can midigate this problem. In many cruisers its good to angle a little bit to tempt the BB to try and shoot your broadside for ricochets.

That would be this guide. The timestamp is set to cue in exactly where they explain how overmatch works, although they don't call it that.

I been playing this game since 2015 and never seen that. Maybe they should hire some Community managers, have maybe a forum ....... or maybe some PR persons. I Personally feel like finding any info on their webpage is shit.

Also how many thinks the bots playing at T10 is taking out their calculator....??

Maybe some better ingame guides.....?

As soon as I saw your post, I went straight to their Youtube channel. Finding this and posting it took me about five minutes; certainly less than ten.

It was published six years ago, so given that you've been in the game for nearly ten, I'm surprised that you missed it.

Woah!  Yelling "cheat" is an integral part of the game!

No, you're confusing it with yelling RIGGED! every time someone who isn't you wins something in Twitch chat. 😁

Yeah, especially when someone is killing a 36% WR T10 player.... then its "Hacks", "Cheats"; "Aimbots" etc etc etc.

(they just happen to sit parked fully broadside on in their newly purchased Premium Yoshino.......) And since they payed WG they should never ever get Dev struck ......

Ingame that translates to "Rigged MM" or "Payed actors"

I was trying to have a bit of a joke with Arcus, but yeah, I know that one well.  Lord Zath's been known to say things like "Holy Hell, did you remember to paypal that guy?" when someone whose replay he's reviewing scores a particularly juicy kill.

And if you think that's bad, you should see the skill selections some of them take. WG's suggestions might not always be the best, but OMG what some of these people do... they don't need to be paid to sit broadside.

Forum etc., yeah, you'd expect any serious online game to be able to provide all that for the community.

They do have one, and it’s an official one too! Oh, you mean one that Google can find and you don’t need an account and third party software to see? What a silly idea.

Skill selections? Bold of you to assume some of them even make it that far…

I've subscribed to the Official World of Warships youtube channel.
Thus, each of their videos is delivered to my youtube notifications/feed.

Or, to look at previous videos, many of which feature some amazingly hot "Pin-up Quality" Spokesmodels, simply visit their channel and start browsing.  🙂

This is true.

I'd be inclined to say "Hey, credit where credit is due", but the skill selections some of them make are absolutely bonkers. They seem to think they need to take all the 1-point skills first, then all the 2-point...

(I will almost always take out a brand new ship for the first time with a zero-point captain and no upgrades, but only into co-op and only to identify areas of particular weakness - turning, acceleration, etc. - that are particularly needful of improvement. There's no way I'm going into Randoms like that.)

So.. you wouldn't recommend playing randoms with a 0 point captain or no captain at all?

Not deliberately, no.

"No captain at all" is stupid IMHO, because no Commander XP is earned (important if there's a mission going to earn that) and even the tiny bit of ECXP you would otherwise get (5% of total CXP earned) is wasted. Zero point commanders are free. Just put one on; you can mulch him for ECXP afterwards.

That was how I was, when I first began playing WOWs and hadn't yet learned & understood how the Captain's Skills were supposed to work.

To be fair, Star Trek Online has a similar "lack of tutorial education" with their Captain's Skills system for new players.

Well.. I typically these days don't recruit captains on, say, low tier or even tier 5 ships that I have no intention of keeping. Part of the reason is I got already plenty of captains idling in the reserve as it is.

Drachinifel has a new video - Why do battleships miss after they get their first hit. And from viewing the film it looks like Wargaming has these same reactions in WoWS. Maybe the RNG in dispersion is suppose to be that way? It makes more sense now. It is good to have more than one opinion on gunnery.

It makes sense, but if that's what is really going on in WoWS, it has to be some bit of legacy code from the very early days. A relic of the lost potential of WoWS, in other words.

This is why I watched a shipload of how-to videos before I even so much as downloaded the game.

If you can 'digest' the information in that form, good for you. I've always needed something more tangible, like a printed manual myself. Typically, when gaming I used to have the manual open right behind the keyboard.

Oddly enough, when I'm reading about upgrades and changes to WOWS itself, I do prefer reading the changes to watching and hearing them being described. However, when it comes to a particular ship, I want to see it being played and the build being discussed in that context.
