Report Tiger!

Had what turned out to be a funny game today.  T10 match and I’m playing Tiger.  As many know, one of my techniques is to push to contact and radar the DD.  In this game, I pushed and pushed and pushed…and no DD.  In fact, based on minmap observations, I eventually identified the location of all the DDs and none were going to be in contact.  So…I just continued my push.  There was little else I could do.

At one point, a teammate came up in chat and asked me *what the doodle* I was doing.  My reply, somewhat tongue in cheek, was “I don’t know, but it’s interesting”.  A little bit of humor, but a little bit of serious as I’ve never been in this position running Tiger.  But once I was there…what else could I do but keep pushing?  I had to hug the map as some reds were close to my detect ring.  And that DD at D 8/9 knew something was up as I detected him when he fired and his positioning blocked LOS from the rest of my team.  Probably scratching his head as to how he was being detected.

I eventually get all the way to the back of the map…and my teammate is now calling on my team to report me.  But I get a bit of support from another teammate that notes my position might be it.  I’m trying to keep my detect ring off the Haarlem...but he retreats into me and my secret is revealed…forcing me to smoke up and finish him off.  Now the CV is on to m

No worries, I was also able to take the CV out.

Then the fun begins.  My teammate is hell bent on getting me reported.  I ask why…and then a cascade of other teammates pile on with their whys.  I’m ROFL at this point.

But it gets better.  I thought I’d probably be sitting in the bottom half of the pack on the score sheet as I spent 90% of the match running the border…but I found myself at the top…and I almost literally fell out of my chair I was laughing so hard.

Nice game. Some people may be quick to report instead of waiting to see if your bid pays off. Nice to see you got compliments for the slightly unusual success.

Congrats. Knowing where reds are even if you can't shoot them is still good team data. If they can apply it. And the mini-map when all the report please (so polite) whys came out? Priceless.

It's also good to know what Tiger is best at.  In a T10 game, it's mostly about catching DDs so the team can shoot at it.  In this game, I was initially pushing to catch a DD that often pushes the boarder side.  After I pushed a bit, I noted two of the three DDs were mid to far side and one...the RADAR one (but mine was longer range) on my side.  And he was sitting behind a rock.  I could have engaged him, but to what end?  I can't kill him alone...it takes team focus.  So if I engaged, I'd get very little effect, and then the reds would focus me. Even with my smoke, it would only be a matter of time.  This was a T10 match.

So, once the chances of the game found me at the position I was at, it seemed I might as well push into the backfield to spot...and if per chance...help get the CV.  If it were not a T10 game, I might have done something different because a top tier cruiser can't take itself out of a  match for that length of time.  But a bottom tier Tiger whos primary ability is spotting or radaring...well, into the backfield I go.

I can only surmise that player hell bent on getting me reported simply did not understand the limits of a Tiger in a T10 match.  And given I chose the backfield push, also the reason I had to hug the border...I was just on the limits of detection. So, I was going to turn in, but could not.  Also, after the DDs, all of which were accounted for, Tiger had the best conceal.  So I could spot cruisers and BBs that could not spot me.  If I achieved that, the cruisers and BBs would know someone was in the backfield...and that alone would cause some to start looking...or get the CV to look...all of which takes them off the main line of attack.

All in all, it turned out well based on several factors.  No harm.  The player who called for reporting me just simply did not understand the strategy and tactics involved.  the other players that supported me understood the score (pun intended).  No harm...no foul.  Hopefully a learning experience.

I recall the days when a DD could relatively easily get into the rear of the enemy team to create havoc. Good play spotting & sinking CV with your Tiger. 🙂
