Ensign Cthulhu Posted December 10, 2024 Posted December 10, 2024 Yes, helicopters existed in World War 2 and flew from ships. The Kriegsmarine tried them as ASW patrol aircraft with marker flares and small bombs, although plans for mass production were spoiled by the air war going badly for Germany, whilst the American Hoverfly was used extensively for medevac. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NiJu4GTivGY 5
Snargfargle Posted December 10, 2024 Posted December 10, 2024 (edited) There's a museum in the northern part of my state where the first patented helicopter in America can be seen. It flew in 1910. Since no motors could be found that were both powerful and lightweight enough to install on it at the time, it was powered from the ground by a long belt. Edited December 10, 2024 by Snargfargle 2
Daniel_Allan_Clark Posted December 10, 2024 Posted December 10, 2024 I believe I have made a proposal for a Commonwealth CV line that focuses on ASW warfare. One of the ideas was to have a consumable of ASW helicopters that could provide underwater vision over a certain area...thus allowing airstrikes and avoidance made easier... 1

Yeah I can definitely see WG implementing that one on the lower tier ships, for ASW air drops and probably mine drops as well. 2
Sidelock Posted December 10, 2024 Posted December 10, 2024 (edited) The Flettner Fl282 is perhaps the most famous WWII helicopter. It was tested from the light cruiser Köln in 1941 who had an helipad built on her Bruno Turret. The idea was for it to be used as a ferrying transport between ships and as an reconnaissance platform. Had a lot of trials but ultimately the plant were it was built was bombed to hell and the soviets shot down the majority of the 24 built. Edited December 10, 2024 by Sidelock 4
