Wolfswetpaws Posted December 5, 2024 Posted December 5, 2024 "How're you coping with the weather in your area? 🙂 " Here in New Hampshire, I just finished clearing the snow off of my driveway. Now, the snow has resumed falling and the snowflakes are bigger than they were a few hours ago. ::: Le sigh ::: 4
Admiral_Karasu Posted December 5, 2024 Posted December 5, 2024 Just like with cakes, layers upon layers, and it isn't even really cold yet, and there like really isn't snow either .... yet. Winter is still coming. 3
HogHammer Posted December 5, 2024 Posted December 5, 2024 Mid-south, Little Rock area, having typical seasonal weather. It can be cold one day and warm the other, depending on which way the prevailing winds blow. Today, the high is only 44 degrees. Throughout the years, I've seen temps in the 80s or down in the single digits. Go figure! 2
Wolfswetpaws Posted December 5, 2024 Author Posted December 5, 2024 The snowfall and cloudy skies seemed to have been blown along, in my area. Conditions appear to be half-cloudy or half sunny, depending on one's optimism, at the moment. 🙂 1
Snargfargle Posted December 5, 2024 Posted December 5, 2024 Here's the almanac for a possible White Christmas. We are supposed to have one but no precipitation is forecast for the next two weeks. 2

I_cant_Swim_ Posted December 5, 2024 Posted December 5, 2024 32°F or 0°C outdoors. Since we got the oil furnace fixed a few days ago, indoors is a lot more pleasant again. Our apple trees (old variety) keep their apples well into winter, and today i used the telescopic fruit picker to collect a couple of crates. The pears and the plums are long gone (since early October) and the walnut tree has just about finished shedding its big leaves, that I've had to pile into a separate compost heap that we keep for this tree only. It sheds a LOT of leaves... It's cloudy and wet. Well, now it's dark, cloudy, and wet, as it's almost 9 pm. I've cleared out the junk from the garage so I can get the car in if needed - strained my back a bit in the process because I'm sitting too much... I certainly need to do more walking. 2
Justin_Simpleton Posted December 5, 2024 Posted December 5, 2024 It's been <20F all day and the bird bath keeps freezing over. Iowa. 2
Tpaktop2_1 NA Posted December 5, 2024 Posted December 5, 2024 Wash, DC cold in the 20F. Blowing winds with flakes of BS. Nothing like PA or NY as in snow levels. Getting 5ft of snow on the roof would scare me. 1
Asym Posted December 5, 2024 Posted December 5, 2024 I spent all day working in the woods preparing for a Muzzle Loading shoot Saturday AM. It was 26 degrees at 1000 when we normally start the Monthly match on Saturday.... Saturday is supposed to be warmer. But, it's time for my 6 point Compote and a pocket full of hand warmers.... I changed and painted (as best I could that cold !) a bunch of targets. I refuse to make shooting "boring;" and well, I am universally hated for a few days after I set up a range. This weekend will be no different. And, there were some really big white tail doe out there....!!! Good Lord.....we have a set of twin does this season and they seem to think some of us are "ok" to visit with..... We are a game sanctuary so they are safe within our boundaries.... 2

I've worked dozens of accidents caused by people running into deer. I don't think that a single member of my family hasn't run into a deer at one time or another. You can't avoid them at night. They will jump from a pitch-black ditch right in front of you, if they don't actually bash into the side of your truck instead. When I used to bow hunt in the winter, the game warden would come around with a truck full of frozen roadkill deer to give away. He'd give you all the tagged carcasses you wanted. I just looked up the stats -- 37% of all accidents in Kansas, 10,000 per year, are caused by deer. Here's a fun fact for you: a couple of weeks ago, a husband and a wife, traveling opposite directions on a highway near Wichita, crashed into the same deer. 1

I grok that you're passionate about your position derived from past experiences and learning, but ... it's not raining deer. They aren't a weather phenomena, so they're "off topic". 😉 1

That doesn't necessarily imply that the responses have to be about about the weather per se, just how one is coping with it. Many people cope with the weather by enjoying seasonal recreational activities. One also has to cope with the fact that there are going to be a whole lot more deer-related accidents as the weather gets cooler and the rut begins. 1

It's amazing what a cup of hot cocoa and a roof over one's head can do. 🙂 1

I'll have to find a recipe first though as I don't have any mix on hand. 🍵 1

That had to be the coldest I've ever been and that include several assignments to Alaska and Maine ! But, I'm gonna wear my Whitney six point Capote and then, I don't care how cold it is ! 2

Nothing had a heater except for the Ambulance but that was only for frostbite emergencies. It was a mogas-burning contraption that roared like a jet engine and filled the back of the 'goat with fumes. I've been to Kaiserslautern. It was cool but not really cold as it was October. However, just as soon as we got back I got sent TDY to Irwin for three months. It was pretty cold there, at least in the mornings. We were rarely at the base; always out in the desert. In fact, the base was still mostly mothballed at the time. I did get to see some A-10s. I believe that was the first time they were flown during a coordinated live-fire exercise. Nobody knew what they were. I was attached to a recon infantry platoon as their medic and the A-10s were firing behind us at targets in front of us. The coldest was Basic at Leonard Wood though. The snow didn't melt until graduation day, when it rained instead. My Class-As were wet for the entire bus ride to Sam Houston. There, we did a river-crossing problem the day before graduation and everything in my duffel bag was wet again all the way to Polk, where it was also raining. 2
ShasoDan Posted December 6, 2024 Posted December 6, 2024 (edited) We do not have real Winter in Bavaria anymore. There will be heavy snowfall now and then, but winter with snowfall beginning in November and ending in Feburary is done. I gave up cross-country skiing 40 years ago. Up to then I could at least every two years grab my ski throw it down in front of the porch and start skiing. Nowadays even in the nearby Alp mountains cross country skiing isn't reliably possible. My son (21 now) had winters, were we could go to the hill nearby and have some fun with the sledge. When he was twelve he announced he does pity the little children because there are no more winters were they could take their sledge out. Winter has warmed up since. Last year we had one week with what I would call snow, not just white on the walkway. Edited December 6, 2024 by ShasoDan 5
Estaca_de_Bares Posted December 8, 2024 Posted December 8, 2024 Mediterranean coast of Andalusia, pretty windy nights as of late, windows rattling. Aside from that, it's been an unusually warm November (it did hail a couple of times, though) and early December: I'm still wearing single-layered cotton jackets and T-shirts beneath them, zipping up the former early in the morning/late in the evening or when there's a bit of wind during the day, and sometimes having to take them off when in the sunlight around noon. Had it been a normal autumn, I would've needed long sleeves beneath for a couple of weeks already. Wolfswetpaws Posted December 8, 2024 Author Posted December 8, 2024 (edited) Conditions (from what I can observe outside my window) this morning: ~ skies are partly sunny ~ approximiately 1 inch (25.4 mm) of snow fell and accumulated overnight. ~ local temperatures are 32 degrees Fahrenheit / zero degrees Celsius. ~ the street was plowed sometime overnight 🙂 Edited to add: I coped by having a nice breakfast & drinking a hot mug of coffee. And, later, by shoveling the driveway. The temperatures have risen to about 40 degrees Fahrenheit, which helped. Overnight temperatures are expected to dip below freezing, though. Snargfargle Posted December 8, 2024 Posted December 8, 2024 A guy on the Tech forums lives near the Appalachians. For some reason a really cold air mass was lingering over their area yesterday. He said his thermometer read 14 and when I looked on Wundermap it was reporting 10 degrees in the mountains between Virginia and West Virginia. 1
Wowzery Posted December 8, 2024 Posted December 8, 2024 Personally, hoping for no snow where I live. Its not a good thing here in Houston. 2 1
Efros Posted December 8, 2024 Posted December 8, 2024 I work as a teacher in rural Maine and we had our first snow day of the season on Thursday, about 7" of wet nasty snow. Roads were a mess, with cars taking unplanned cross country diversions all over the place. Looking at the timing of the snow tomorrow night we may have another one, temperatures and timing are critical. 2
