Star Trek collection

Is it just me, or the number of games and effort to 4 patches and 1 perm camo requires way too much grinding?  They want you to grind out 8 collection tokens, and the price for each seems to be going up, where does it cap?  Does not help than in some games you don't get to make any stars.

How... is the price going up?

You need progressively more stars for "Extra Levels", that is how you obtain tokens you can exchange for missing collection items.

The first extra level was 10 stars, which is two flawless games.  This next one is 20 stars, and I don't know if it caps out at this, or goes higher.

Yes, the tail end of the Star Trek event requires a lot of grinding for most players to finish the collection without paying. In an Op where 50% of random teams lose and the other 50% scrape by with 2-3 stars the requirements are pretty brutal. Outside of those able to run 5-man divisions, it will be a slog.

But that’s the point, after all. Don’t those shiny new containers look attractive now?

It is quite brutal, if the price remains at 20 stars, that's 150 stars total to complete collection, I calculate approximately 80 games to finish the collection.  Okay, if I get lucky or division up maybe I can lower that to say 50 games.  At 12 minutes average a game, that is still 10 hours of game play at best, for 3 patches and 1 2D perma camo?  Really?  Ok, screw this.

Almost as if this were by design... nah, perish the thought.

Star tokens are utilized to purchase ship upgrades. The OP is referring to the collection tokens awarded in the extra levels at the end of the current reward track, which are exchanged for the remaining 8 pieces of the ST collection.

Somehow in all this I missed what the final prize of the collection is.

I'm managing to carry random teams at a much better rate than that; only two losses and no wins below 4 stars on my way to clear the last chunk of steel. What ship are you using?

I use D'DERIDIX with UNI build, as I find this allows me to max chances to carry and burn the queen down in the end if the team is alive.  I am consistently scoring at the top of the list with most damage and kills, so I must be doing something right.  Having said that, I played 7 star trek ops this morning, I lost 4 due to team mates dying (did over a million damage in one of those), and I won 3 with getting 5 stars + 5 stars + 4 stars.  That's 7 games with over an hour committed for a grand total of 14 earned stars.  I am done.

Wow, that is impressive indeed. FWIW I'm using the DD and the Cruiser and losing 4 out of 5 games. Admittedly I only have one upgrade level on those ships, but that can't be the reason. So what's the best approach to winning this?

For me personally, the "just stay alive" approach has been working.

- I've been running the build in the above screenshot, although I should probably swap PHP1 for ECR2.

- Opening move is to advance at moderate speed toward the nearest point, usually with full thrust and wiggling to get all guns involved. From there, sweep into position to kill the harbor guards on one side or the other, turning away to kite so the DDs can't spawn on you.

- Focus your fire on the destroyers first, only the photon launchers can really do much burst damage to you. Focus your heavy and secondary guns on the same target.

- Use your photon torpedoes as fast as they recharge. Pick a CA or BB near full health that no one else is likely to target (far away is fine if the shot is clear). Hold the shot if there's no good target, or if won't reload before the Queen spawns.

- Save the funny button "Tuvok's Fury" until the Queen spawns unless desperate, it's unlikely to get a second charge and you need the extra DPM to go for the 5th star.

- Use the shield recharge any time you can and you are below 20k shield HP, unless the map wide orbital strike will happen soon. In that case, save until all enemies or dead or 5 seconds before the strike.
-- Keep your speed up and dodge the earlier strikes.

- Use the heal anytime you have 12k hull points of damage to fix.

- Use Redshirt if you get pinged to mitigate the incoming wave of photons. Save one use for the Queen; if you're in good shape you can use one when the last big wave spawns and troll in front of them to protect your teammates. Unless desperate, only use if for mitigating photon salvoes, for the end boss, or for the big wave if you have one to spare.

- When the Queen appears, activate the funny button and get as close as you can without getting inside minimum photon range. You'll probably need to use Redshirt to survive a photon wave from her, and might use it anyway to draw fire. Your photons should recharge fast enough to get two shots off with the 5-star timer live; after the second one, go for a ram unless you're the last guy and need to pass on the 5th star to secure the 4th.

- Hold fire on minion #3 if both ports aren't clear and focus the guards instead. You need the bots as damage sponges.

I'm undefeated with 9ish wins in this OP with this approach in spite of bad lag at points (which is I went with the big slow ship instead of a small, fast one to start with; I kept with it because it was working). I'm 3-2 in two 1701D, two Klingon, and one Romulan games.

I can attest to that. Too many times, teammates got killed early because they were too aggressive by going up north to meet the bot ships. The result was that they got focus fired and got killed. My strategy was to stay back further and defend the caps. You don't need to kill all the bots in the 3rd wave. The Queen ship will destroy the remaining bots when it appears. You need at least 3 surviving members to effectively kill the queen.

Is it me, or is a big issue in this Op how people don't coordinate which targets to use the photon torpedoes and phasers on? You've taken the shield down to one of those BBs, you're about to hit it for 100k, but someone else does it first, and now you have to wait for the bloody thing to recharge...

I have completed the "battle pass" style progression.  I have 8 of 16 collection pieces.  I fear the grind for the remainder is going to be burdensome.

More than that, if the BXP from Star Trek event mode doesn't count towards knocking down Snowflakes for Festive Rewards, then we have competition for our actually gameplay time prioritization.

That's my thinking as well, not exactly great timing by Wargaming.

Absolutely rubbish rewards. I guess Trek owners are hungry for money they can use to ruin it ever more. Maybe the next show will have stupid racist drunkards and more teenagers flying a ship made out of poop, suicide and hate.

I won like 2 out 10 games, so until its balanced properly there is no way to finish the collection or at least collect all steel in reward track. Better just play ranked for a bit less steel, but with doubloons and grinding some ship at the same time.

Posted

5/5 today, 21 stars earned. I probably got lucky, but I'm assuming people will get slightly better at it as they play it more, so no big deal.

What puzzles me is the final reward for the collection: it's just a single permacamo which you can get for fairly cheap in the Armory (either directly or by buying the red crates). They're obviously selling that bundle of blue crates to people who won't be bothered to grind the Operation, but it's just for the sake of completing the collection, not for the actual reward.

I had innitial loss streak of 3 yesterday, after which I've won like 12? games and lost 1?

The key is for the whole team to find balance between aggression and careful defense.

If you end up with cowards then you just get overwhelmed and die miserably, even if playing brilliantly. If you are over aggressive you are liable to die to torpedoes or having your shields stripped at wrong monent.

Yep. Don't stray forward, and play classic defend

But ...... I'm quite baffled by your build. I mean....

Bird-of-pray.png

This had been working for me for quite some time.  It is a sort of "run around and put out the fires" build and playtstyle.

I have yet to get less than 1700 bxp on winning side.

While the Star Trek & World of Warships collaboration has been fun and nice, some of the novelty has worn-off, for me.

Which is why I've been playing Star Trek Online or playing normal WOWs, lately.

It's reaching the point of grind, but I want one of the badges from the collection. I doubt I'll finish the entire thing, just the first two collection pieces off the end.
