Not so much slowing the game as it is that new tech isn’t compatible with 32 bit.
Folks out there running WoWs on a Commodore 64 hooked up to AOL.

windows 8.

Windows 8 = where you could access file folders easily & move them around.

Windows 10 = altered to make access to files more difficult.

You know why this was done? An IT college instructor said it was a  Microsoft corporate decision of 'we, the company, know better than you the user.'

All to have more corporate control. You want proof? Microsoft is already saying they plan to no longer support Win 10 (ofc, to sell Win 11, etc, etc). YW 🤣.

A lot of it is done because for the most part, people have no clue how to properly use a computer nor even know how to use " " or + in their search to narrow down the results to what you want instead of what they want you to see. Sure, they know how to use windows, or excel, or any number of programs but few know how to use their registry, format a HD or any DOS commands.

The western world runs on $, businesses need income and the only way microsoft can do so is to extort $ from us. Ubuntu is a better program, takes less resources than windows and gives the user far more control.  I used it for a few years but when I built my new computer (new quite a few yrs ago), I didnt reinstall it. I should have, kinda regret it but a lot of things wont run on Ubuntu without some, occasionally a lot of, effort and I dont enjoy that part of computers anymore.

And it requires extra dev time to create 32 bit compatible versions of all new game assets. Plus needing everything to at least be convertible to 32 bit could limit some dev choices when it comes to new content or certain upgrades. At the very least, people have been talking about a game engine update for years, and at this point needing one that still supports 32 bit systems severely limits the available options.

When you consider that 32 bit programs are usually limited to 4 gigs of ram (which is nothing in modern gaming) and that 32 bit systems now are likely less than 1% of all current systems, I’m surprised it’s taken them this long to pull support for it. And actually, I was surprised when I saw that announcement because I thought they already had ended it a while ago.

On the OS side, 32 bit is basically dead anyway. Apple hasn’t supported it since the release of Catalina in 2019, and Microsoft ended support on the last 32 bit version of Windows 10 two months ago (and is ending antivirus support for it next year). There are still Linux distros that support it, but even those are getting fewer in number.

What I like about the various Linux distributions is that they can utilize older hardware with aplomb and extend the useful lives of people's computers and peripherals.

What I don't like, is that Linux isn't always compatible with the latest & greatest games.
In my limited understanding, some emulators do exist.
But, eventually the software demands too much from the hardware.  This topic is an example situation (with Windows O/S), but other examples exist for Linux, too.
And WOWs ended support for Apple systems years ago.
