Kotowski or Königsberg ?

Recommended Posts

At present I am grinding those two cruisers. The Kotowski and the Königsberg. I would like to know, what do the more experienced player think about these ships in comparison?
And then which of the two tier 6 ships that follow you would recommend. The Budjonny or the Nürnberg or none of them?

Thank you for your feedback!

These two Russian Cruisers are a bit faster & have the 152mm Guns with a slower reload. It is the 'Kotovski' (correct spelling).

The German Cruisers here have the faster reload on 150mm guns & are a bit slower speed-wise.

I'm not sure which is better - maybe a personal preference, although you see more German Cruisers, perhaps - maybe for what is in the higher tiers?

I'm sure nationality has something to do with the choice - there has to be a lot of players who are German as opposed to Russian on the EU Server.

I prefer the historical ships so I have more German Cruisers than Russian ones (which, at the higher tiers may not even have been built).

Some experienced players appear to favour the ships with faster reloads as these ships can, usually, do more damage over the same amount of time.

Just grind both. It takes like 4 good games to get past t5.

As far as recommendations, do a little research into each line to see if the playstyle suites you. We have no idea how you like to play.

FWIW, Konigsberg is very good at scoring citadels on broadside cruisers.  So much so that I still use it in Co-op when a mission requirement for citadel hits arises.  Her 2 km longer torpedo range is also more comfortable than her Russian counterpart.

Neither has much to talk about in their own right and it should be whether you are more interested in Chapayev and Aleksander Nevsky, or Yorck, Hindenburg and Clausewitz.

As for the dead horse of (hurr durr muh @$$^@#^#$...) historical realism, German researchable cruisers fare no better than the Soviet ones regarding Tiers 2~4 and 7~10. Svietlana was finished after the turmoils of Russian Revolution with a changed name, Both Yorck and Shchors are preliminary studies, both Roon and Dmitri Donskoi are WG/Lesta's trademarked work of alternative history fiction and Aleksander Nevsky is, in turn, arguably more historical than Hindenburg or Clausewitz.

Kotovski is certainly not worse for punishing broadside cruisers. DPM is lower, but pen and ballistics are superior.

Overall, Konigsberg is gold standard as far as T5 cruisers go for randoms or coop. But Kotovski got a few buffs recently and is pretty solid too.

Both the German and Russian cruiser lines are good. You can't go wrong.

If you choose Russian, follow the heavy cruiser line first, the one that ends in Petropavlovsk, a monster cruiser. Light cruisers, starting at Chapayev, are hard to play after T8.

Personally, I found the German line more fun. T7 Russian Schors is fun but a bit fragile, and T9 Riga is hard to play, whereas I found the Germans are pretty tough and useful at all levels from T5 on.

I suggest running both lines at the same time as they are good. I would usually suggest getting a bunch of lines to T6 before moving on to T7 gives you time to work out the kinks, learn new tricks, unlearn old behaviors.

Not sure what modes you play. For co-op the German T6 is superior with the extra torps and fast firing guns, also the built in high HE pen is nice. For Operations I generally prefer the Russian T6, the German gun layout is much more difficult to make the best use of here. Also the Russian benefits can shine here, extra AP pen, faster time on target for shells, spotter plane. For Randoms both play different, the German is a great kiter, the Russian gives out some nasty hits but is a bit flimsy for shooting out in the open a lot.

Tho, having the guns in the back could be a bit challenging, requires a bit of thinking and good positioning. Generally go for flanks to avoid being crossfired and don't push too hard. Both Konigsberg and Nurn are good at defence, less for pushing.  The follow up german  line Nurnberg - Yorck is quite good to play in ops and will help you to grind the line faster.

Thank you all together your comments! They show me, that I am not so wrong in my evaluation.
I will of course research and use both tier 6 ships.
From the tier 5 ships I prefer the Königsberg and will keep it, while the Kotovski might have to leave the port.

This is why. All my personal point of view of course

Kotovski pro:
- Fast
- Good range
- Good ballistics and accurate guns.
- AP citadel hits are fun
Kotovski con:
- Big
- A bit sluggish
- Not so good against BBs

Königsberg pro:
- Two aft turrets with 6 guns good for kiting, island huging
- Can dodge shots
- Good torps
- Improved HE pen
Königsberg con:
- Not so fast
- limited range

Both. Other things as well. At lower-mid tiers, the economy is sufficiently gentle that getting to T7 is very quick and painless; play as many different things as you can, and see which you tend to get on with.

I mainly stick to PvE with cruisers; in that context, I prefer the Germans, but Russian radar - from T8 - can be pretty fearsome against sneakier opponents (which means me in PvP, as I mostly play DDs, and I worry rather more about facing competently-played Russians than the Germans).
