Fortunately my lad isn't into hockey or it could get busy. I would have liked for him to do it for a very short time, just so that he could experience what it was like, but even at a little-kid level it immediately became serious business and we didn't want to go there. He certainly didn't. She did okay, given that she's not a hardcore competition skater. The number of skaters that fell on their butts even at the highest level was quite significant, although of course the higher-skilled skaters require a significantly more difficult manoeuvre before they'll 'go over'. But it is apparently better for one's score to give it a shot and fall than to not attempt it at all. The hallmark of an increasingly senior skater is how well they pick themselves up 'on the move' and continue with their routine, although I once saw one of my daughter's instructors faceplant and slide gracefully half the length of the rink before she could stop herself. Even then, she was so good she almost made it look normal. I can't skate to save myself. Edited November 11 by Ensign Cthulhu 3

We, as a Military family, seemed to always be stationed where a retired, Professional Hockey player ran a Hockey program.... So, my Son had a lot of advantages from day one of that quest across four States where we lived.... In the end, between Roller and Ice Hockey, we visited no less than 12 other states and Canada several times... He gave up Hockey when he joined the Army and he retired several years ago... And, I do not skate ! I was a catcher in Baseball; a Keeper in Soccer; and, if I had played Hockey, I'd would have been a Goalie..... See a pattern there. And, almost all of my military career - an XO..... Sorry for your loss as well....... 1

After trying some very basic figure-skating moves while wearing hockey-skates, I gained an even greater appreciation for the subtle-but-important differences in disciplines and skate-blade features. Both (hockey and figure-skating) are fun to watch, and Ice-Hockey was fun to play. 🙂 Edited November 11 by Wolfswetpaws 1

Miss C went to support a younger friend in the junior division on Sunday morning. They had one solitary boy in their group. I remarked to Mrs C that I thought he skated like a hockey player. This led to a discussion that indirectly referenced all the stuff you've posted here. 1
