The Movie Thread

Peckinpah had to cut and edit this scene to appease the MPAA who gave it an R-rating.

  • Admiral_Karasu changed the title to The Movie Thread

I just finished watching the movie "Godzilla Minus One".

While there a few places where I felt the plot felt a bit contrived or that it was heavily leaning on Japanese movie-making *traditions* (for lack of a better word).  🤔
It was worth watching, overall.  🙂

IMDB link https://www.imdb.com/title/tt23289160/

Also, some of our beloved in-game ships, or their sisters within a class, make cameo appearances during the film.

Quote

All of the named warships in the film are among the few IJN ships to survive the war in reality. This includes the Takao-class heavy cruiser Takao, Kagerou-class destroyer Yukikaze, Akatsuki-class destroyer Hibiki, Minekaze-class destroyer Yuukaze, Matsu-class destroyer Keyaki, and Sokuten-class minelayer Katashima.

There's a welcome (in my opinion) plot-twist near the end of the movie.

By the way, there are two versions of the film.  One is in color (which I watched) and one is presented in "black & white", for aesthetic or homage purposes.

The music choices were appropriate and welcome, too, as far as I am concerned.

Bottom line?
Two thumbs up.  🙂   👍👍

Edited to add:  Two of the characters have names we recognize from in-game ships.  Namely, Shikishima and Tachibana.  🙂

I thought Godzilla Minus One was a pretty good movie. It was interesting to see how they got around the issue of America not sending ships to help and how they dealt with their ships being disarmed post-war. It was just "hokey" enough to remind one of the original Godzilla movies but not enough to detract from an enjoyable film.

The story of the kamikaze pilot who landed his plane for "repair" instead of completing his useless suicide mission during the final days of the war and how he was ostracized when he came home was interesting too. Overall, I'd say this is the best Godzilla-themed movie I've watched.

If you liked that, then you may want to read (or listen to the audio-book version of) "Thunder Gods".

In the imdb.com trivia section of the movie Godzilla Minus One, the island of Odo is supposed to be fictional.
But, the purpose of the island seems plausible in the movie (to me).
And the mental stress and thought processes of "Special Attack Force" Pilots, as described in "Thunder Gods", might interest you.

The use of a motorcycle in the movie Godzilla Minus One also reminded me of the Bōsōzoku.  Could be merely a coincidence, though.

Tagging @Ensign Cthulhu

The title translates into the language of the Old Ones as "The Floating Buffet."

I think there's a few other Discworld enjoyers here, so here's the trailer for The Hogfather. Based on the book of the same name, it's a three part tv series.

Was lowkey surprised how good of a adaption it was.

I was positively surprised about this one as well, wasn't expecting much when i first watched it, but the actors were amazing, it's now one of the movies i watch over the holidays every year. Not as good, but also fun: Going Postal

This appears to be available on YouTube. Looks like I'm going to be spending the next three hours glued to my monitor. At least I will if the show itself is as intriguing as the trailer.

The Hogfather.

Just finished the mini-series. It was enjoyable enough to keep my attention for over three hours. It probably could have been edited down into a two-hour movie though. I got a kick out of the mouse death.

IIRC correctly The Colour of Magic and Going Postal were the other two that Sky TV did as Christmas specials.  Both had Terry Pratchett in cameos as did the Hogfather.

Victor Mature joined the US Coast Guard after this movie and served during WWII in the North Atlantic and Pacific.

Raquel Squelch was in the 1960s remake which I remember vividly watching when I was a kid. I also remember having a bit of a nerd fight with some of my mates when I told them it was essentially bollocks because of the inclusion of dinosaurs. They weren't having it so insults and the occasional fist were exchanged at which point we were all ejected from the Cinema.

A similar thing happened after a loud discussion about the difference between sonar and radar when watching a Godzilla film, ejected once again.

I remember watching the Raquel Welch version on a UHF television channel, during my youth.
Until today, I had no idea it was a re-make of a previous title.
Now, I'm curious to view the "original" to compare them.

Of course, in 1981, there was a comedy/parody movie.  🙂
