Steel ship time again

I am thinking of getting another steel ship prior to the upcoming anniversary. I already have Bourgogne and am really enjoying it. Although I favor cruisers, none of the steel ones interest me. This will be PVE only, whether coop, the upcoming operations for high tier and asymmetric battles, assuming they come around again. I think I prefer a BB over a DD in operations and asym since I tend to be a bit aggressive in these modes, and a DD is less forgiving of mistakes. The T10 BB's I have for reference are Ohio, Bourgogne, Schlieffen, Thunderer, St Vincent, Montana, Ohio and Grosser Kurfurst. I enjoy all of these and the last round of asym allowed me to obtain the St Vincent, Yamato and Montana.

The Ragnar interest me some, but due to the lack of torpedoes, I don't know how well she would do in the feeding frenzy that is PVE.

I'm assuming the 4 available BB's have varying rates of secondary effectiveness. Just looking at the specs doesn't tell me much since many variables go into how effective they are. Any insight/thoughts would be much appreciated.

If you have Schlieffen, you really don't need Mecklenburg, similarly with Shikishima if you have Yamato.

For PVE, I would go with Austin.  She has HE, SAP, and torpedoes which makes her unique for US cruisers.

If you play ops, then Stalingrad might be an option, although I think Moskva might be a better choice if you have the coal.

I’m not the biggest fan of it to begin with, but in co-op not having torps in a destroyer is a big issue. You can make do without them, but then something else in your flank will just come along and alpha strike the battleship/cruiser you’re trying to gun down.

Of the other steel BB options (Shiki, Meck, Incomp, and Lauria), I’d say Meck and Incomp are the best for co-op only play. Lauria’s fun and Shiki can be good for asymmetric type modes, but they aren’t as suited to co-op. Especially Shiki.

Mecklenburg technically isn’t suited for brawling (at least in randoms or pvp) compared to GK or Schlieffen because of the lower health/poorer armor/terrible firing angles, but it has the secondaries/torps/main battery reload to be fine in pve modes.

Incomp is big and doesn’t turn, but it’s fast, with hard hitting guns and torps (which are always nice against bots). Not as much of a brawler as Meck can be in pve, but the speed and torps help.

Lauria is fast and has hard hitting guns, but the secondary performance is terrible for co-op (very long reload on the large guns, no improved dispersion). She’s a solid ship for asymmetric because of the guns, but not as great a co-op pick.

Shiki is slow, with the same terrible turret traverse as Yamato. That’s not a great combo for co-op (but asymmetric isn’t as bad). It’s also a Yamato hull with the weaknesses that has (and the bots will be good at exploiting it). The secondary performance is basically a Harugumo strapped to each side but you’re still a slow hull that’ll struggle to get into the action fast enough to use them in co-op. If you want a premium IJN BB for co-op, there are other better options (like Iwami for coal).

If you don’t have them, Plymouth and Austin are both decent co-op options, with good DPM to chew through destroyers and cruisers and torps to kill BBs. Stalingrad can work in co-op but the longer reload makes it a bit better for asymmetric (and Moskva’s better for co-op). If you want a destroyer I’d take Z42 over Ragnar for the smokescreens and torps (plus imo it’s more fun than Ragnar anyway).

You have the essential ships for PVE and Co-op already. With the Schlieffen and the GK, you will not need the Mecklenburg. You also have the St. Vincent (with her Engine Boost, Portable Dry Dock, and a Nuclear Torpedo), which is a very fun and capable ship whether in PVE or in PVP modes. You also have the Ohio which is also a very capable battleship in either modes.

I wouldn't get the Ragnar if she'll be used only in PVE. Her lack of torpedoes is a big downside there. I also would not recommend getting the Plymouth. Her 16mm stern and bow armor can be overmatched by battleships we will see in high tier Operations, has poor anti-air (she will be very vulnerable in Hermes), and utterly pathetic firing angles.

If you want play light cruisers for the promised high tier Operations, I suggest you get Austin. She has 32mm side plating, meaning you can bounce some AP. She has the flexibility of SAP and HE, and her unlimited reload booster will send those bots in Co-op and Operations back to Davy Jones' locker fast. She also has Fletcher's upgraded torpedoes, which can be handy should you wish to remind Little Trouble his place in this game.

But if you can wait for a couple of weeks, I recommend we wait for Wargaming to fulfill their promise of bringing high tier Operations first, before spending hard to get resources such as Steel.

I already have Moskva, being one of the early coal ships I obtained. The only coal ships I don't have are the T10 DD's and 2 or 3 T9 BB's.
