What is it that is broken about it? I think I use a mod for smoke so maybe thats why I haven't realized it?!

All Smoke MODs and vanilla in-game smoke timer show wring time - they all only show the puff you are in and thus the smoke timer is constanly changing value...

But isn't that "working as intended"? I mean most skilled players sitting in smoke wont just sit in last puff but instead move back and forth inside the entire smoke trail, and then its very good to know when the puff your sitting in at that moment will disappear and then we all know which way to head for prolonged puffs?

I thought that was 100% intentional by WG?

Nope... bug was introduced 3+ months ago - it was working OK before... 😞

Aah ok! I thought this was intentional. I actually prefer this way then just seeing the last puff timer tbh.

In my hood, the smoke timer is 2 puffs then pass to the right.  I thought this was common knowledge?

I don't understand.  Is it supposed to work off the first smoke you laid, the last smoke you laid, or the smoke you are in, regardless of if it is laid by you or someone else?

Reason says that the last is true, as without that, ships with crawling smoke would always have a zero time left if it was in the last puff laid, a ship that entered a smoke location not laid by them wouldn't know when they would be exposed, and if the ship reversed course, it would have the wrong duration of coverage.

I think the OP doesn't understand the issue.

Have you read the official Discord thread and official WG WoWs  acknowledgment I posted above?

I didn't realise there was a bug. I always check the time for the smoke I'm in whether it was mine or a teammate's smoke.

Sometimes I make a bit of a trail of smoke and reverse all the way to the beginning puff to throw off the smoke torpedo magnets if I am so inclined to stay in smoke a little longer. They usually toss torps at the end puff. Whereas the timer counts down the puff you are in then I have some time to move.

So I guess I like it the way it is.

I tried and it wouldn't come up.  Perhaps because I am not subscribed to WG's Discord?

It still seems to me to be working the way you would expect it to if it is telling you the duration of the smoke you are currently in.

I don't want to know the timer of the smoke I'm in.  It changes constantly, because I'm constantly moving in smoke.  I want to know how much time I have on the smoke in general.  That is how it used to work and it was fine.  It's a piece of garbage now.  Just take it from somebody who plays Mino, Smolensk allot.

You just need a little situational awareness to notice when the timer gets low and how many smoke rings have already dissipated. And if you’re sitting in smoke for full duration, you’ll have a torpedo swarm to avoid as well. I like to use smoke as torpedo bait.

So, you are fine being exposed with a few seconds left on the timer because it was a general time and not an accurate one?  I don't understand that.  I much prefer an accurate count of how long I have left in the smoke I am using than a ballpark figure that may be longer or shorter.

Besides, aren't you able to get a general idea from knowing the accurate time and knowing the adjacent smoke puffs were laid somewhere around the same time?  I don't see how there is a problem here, as everyone gets what they want right now.

I suppose that I'm in the crowd that prefers to know the time of the patch of smoke that I'm currently occupying.

But isn't that a good thing? If youre constantly moving inside smoke, dont you wanna know when the buff youre inside gonna be gone? If im in the middle of the trail I dont wanna know when the last puff is gone, then I might suddenly get spotted because the puff youre moving in RIGHT NOW disappeared?

The ships I'm using move incredibly slow and take a long time to adjust.  Usually I am moving backwards, not forward.  I need to plan ahead.  Looking at a timer that says 18 seconds and then I move and it says 10 seconds is confusing because you don't know the parameters of a smoke puff.  Maybe it's just me, but I much prefer the old way and wish they would just fix it.

What did the old way measure, exactly?  The time since the consumable stopped working, the time since the first puff was deployed, or the time left in the puff you were using seem the only possibilities.

I might remember it wrong, but afaik it used to show the longest-lasting puff you're currently in?

What I know for sure is that the bug makes a mess of it: right now it shows the shortest remaining puff, which is a problem when you have multiple puffs in the same spot.

Especially in a DD with British short smokes where every second counts it can be veeery irritating as I stop firing 2 sec before timer runs out.. only to have it replaced by a new timer "hey, just kidding, you still get another 7 sec on your smoke" because it was 2 puffs on top of eachother.

I guess that this is the vanilla client, correct?  I use a mod from Aslain, which is a count-down timer based on the smoke sector.    I'll disable the mod and check what exactly is happening in smoke (time-wise).

Ah ha... This is a clear description of the issue.

It doesn't matter both vanilla and all MODs show wrong (i.e. bugged) smoke timer time... 😞
