Steel ship suggestion

Recommended Posts

So I finally have enough steel again to consider buying a ship with coupon but I am looking a the options at a complete loss. Looking for suggestions of can't miss steel ships for Co-op only, I can afford anything except the FDR and already have the Bourgogne.

I would also appreciate suggestions for t9 or 10 coal ships for Co-op only, I have none of the t9 so far, and of the t10 I have Brisbane, Napoli, Yoshino, Salem, and Marceau.

Don't worry about playstyle past the Co-op only, or what I already enjoy. I'm just looking for some variety or fun mostly and to flesh out my overall port.

With the current French DD events and missions, the Marceau is a ship I recently began looking-at with greater interest.
Haven't welcomed her to my Port, yet.  But, she's interesting.

My steel ships, in order of my purchase are the Shikishima, the Bourgogne and the Gato.
Each has her charms.  You already have the Bourgogne.  So, with your "Co-op" only criteria, I'll try to offer a suggestion or two.
Earlier, in another similar topic, I suggested the "R. Lauria" and the "Mecklenburg" to @Lord_Slayer.

And, if I were shopping with my own steel, those two would be at the top of my "next steel ship" shopping list.

X Ruggiero di Lauria or X Mecklenburg Doubloons

The former is faster and has bigger guns and a supposedly interesting torpedo defense system.
The latter is reasonably fast (for a battleship) and offers torpedoes for brawling, especially attractive in the feeding-frenzy environment of Co-op mode.

Ships with one-dimensional play-styles, especially H.E. spammers intended to hide behind islands or inside smokescreens, aren't appealing to me.

Co-op mode ships, as you know, benefit from being able to dish-out a lot of damage in a short amount of time via multiple weapon systems, while being fast enough to get into the middle of intense actions (before the match is over in approximately 7 minutes) and maneuver well enough to dodge incoming ordnance from multiple directions.
Yeah, yeah, I know that "maneuver well enough to dodge" might not immediately bring the word battleship to one's mind.
Which is why some of the Destroyers may offer some appeal.
That being said, I've been known to play my battleships at their limits.

On to suggestions for coal ships.

The Iwami.
I've been very satisfied with my Iwami.  She's got plenty of weapons, can wiggle decently (for a BB) and offers a simple "un-cluttered-by-numerous-consumables" play-style.  Spec'd for a full or almost-full secondary battery build (Aiming Systems Mod-1, for long-range accuracy), she's able to dish-out the damage and tank a lot, too.

The Black.
This Fletcher class Destroyer is versatile and fun, and is among the few Destroyers that offer a radar consumable.
While not quite as stealthy as some DD's, her concealment is competitive and so are her weapons (as destroyers go).

The Neustrashimy
She's been a pleasant surprise, for me.  I've got mine set-up as a stealthy torpedo boat.  I welcomed her as a Holiday season loot-crate result.
If played well, this little Russian DD can be sneaky and deliver some torpeodo damage.
Her guns aren't her strong suit.  But, her Repair Party consumable helps her stay afloat long after other DD's may have been sunk.

The Halford.
As a hybrid-ship, she's a bit of a niche-market 'bote.
That said, if the hybrid ship play-style appeals to you, then give this Fletcher class alternative DD some consideration.
The planes allow one to attack targets that are too far away for guns or torpedoes, and provide scouting & vision for the team.
The upcoming changes to CV's might spill-over and affect the Halford's planes and make spotting targets more difficult.
If I were shopping now, I'd wait until after the changes are implemented and fully analyzed.
She's got an eye-catching camouflage, though.  🙂

The Hayate.
Originally offered as a ship which cost 2 million FreeXP (which is how I welcomed her), she's now available for coal.
She's been recently improved (according to the dev-blogs) and the changes were welcome (as far as I was concerned).

My motivation for welcoming the Hayate to my Port was to provide a ship for one of my many Commanders.
As another ship to add to my collection, she's fine.
As a Destroyer being compared with other Tier-10 DD's, the Hayate is competent, but not over-powered.
I'm fond of the Hayate because she represents my personal effort to earn 2 million FreeXP in order to get her.
I suggest looking at her specifications and comparing with similar candidates.  🙂

The Azuma.
The Yoshino's Tier-9 sister, without the torpedoes.  Commander Azur Lane Azuma voice is pleasant to hear, if you have her.
I got the ship because I got the Commander as a reward for completing the Azur Lane collection.

The Agir.
Has torpedoes.  🙂
Good Co-op 'bote.

The Z-44.
A competent German DD.
I needed a ship for my Commander Johannes Meck-Leyne.

The Pommern.
Less maneuverable than the Iwami, but has a faster top-speed.  Shorter ranged torpedoes
Brings German BB flavor and Hydro-acoustic search to the figurative table.
A popular choice among the player-base since her introduction.

The Khabarovsk
A fast Russian Destroyer, with a huge detection radius.
Her concealment (or lack thereof) won't be a problem in Co-op, and her speed will be an asset.
For me, she was an interesting challenge to play in Asymmetric Battles.

What are your thoughts, so far?  🙂

I'll echo some of those coal selections:

Black - Generally, a pretty strong DD. The one real downside to this pick is that she's stupidly expensive. Otherwise, she's a Fletcher with a few tweaks; if you enjoy USN DDs, then you'll enjoy Black. But, again, stupidly expensive, so only spend the coal if you do like USN DDs, and are comfortable with their guns' insanely bad ballistics.

Neustrashimy vs. Khabarovsk - Neustra gets both superheal and smoke at the same time. Khaba has way more gunpower and speed. Between the two, Khaba is the stronger pick for Co-op; fast DDs are the apex predators of the PvE meta right now. Khaba is probably the strongest (in Co-op) of the coal ships you haven't got yet, because of her winning combination of speed, durability, and firepower. Plus, Neustra is just as stupidly expensive as Black. Get Khaba first.

Hayate - IMO this ship went from being decent to being a must-have when WG buffed her. Being able to have both smoke and TRB is insanely powerful- and it's not as if you're throwing spitballs; these are Shima torps you can puke out twenty at a time. Plus, with the sole exception of the not-regularly-available HSF Harekaze, she's the only premium/special IJN DD with a less-than-glacial turret traverse, so she's much comfier to play than most other DDs under the same flag.

Forrest Sherman - A very different sort of DD, but pretty strong (if you don't try to YOLO with her). She's slow for a DD, she isn't maneuverable, and her torp angles are atrociously bad... but she has a giggle-inducing rate of fire on her guns, and that's the main selling point. If you don't have Friesland or Groningen, then Forrest Sherman is a ship you should have in your port for all those main battery hit (or just "get X # of ribbons") farming missions; it isn't difficult to get 300 ribbons in an average-length Co-op game with her. Brain dead playstyle (turn on hydro, park in smoke, tape down fire button until target dies, repeat), but incredibly useful to have around.

Agir - No nitpicks here; Agir is a really good ship, and will serve you well- particularly if you enjoy brawly cruisers, because she's a very brawly cruiser. I've had 1k+ BXP Co-op games in her, and I tend to play very recklessly, so take that for whatever it's worth.

Pommern - The long main battery reload is less than optimal, but Pommern otherwise has all of the features that make a BB great for Co-op: she can make at least 30kts, she has great secondaries, she has torps, and she has hydro.

There is one, however, I will specifically not recommend:

Halford - IMO, don't bother with this one unless you really love planes (or, like me, are obsessed with collecting every single Fletcher WG releases). She's easily the weakest of the Fletcher family; she only has four guns and one torp rack, and does not get any reload enhancements to make up for that firepower deficit, unlike the Greek-flagged Velos- and has a neutered AA suite as well- so unless you can get the planes into action consistently, she's a T9 with about the same throw weight as a T6. Co-op games tend to be short, so you will usually get at most two plane launches per match... if you're not too busy engaging with your other weapons to play with the birdies. Which you probably will be.

For co-op I would say:

Steel:

Incomp, Austin and Stalingrad

Coal:

Khaba, Pommern and Alvaro maybe.

In terms of steel ships, for Coop, I would first recommend the Mecklenburg, as she is currently my favorite Coop ship in the game. I have her set up in full secondary mode, and her relatively fast firing mains, the secondaries, and torps she can be a beast. Further, given the increased number of cruisers her 305s can shred these.

She is though closely followed by the Stalingrad, which can be amazing in the right situation. (Please see  a posting this morning (7-28) in the "Best Coop Battles" as to battles in these two ships.

In regards to the Agir she is basically a smaller Tier IX Mecklenburg and is also awesome for Coop.
