We live in an age where you need to consider EVERYTHING you read, watch or hear can be false. Many folks, particularly on the old side, can't understand even if you watch the dude and hear them talking, it can be all false.

Exactly.

If I see something posted as fact, I am immediately looking it up elsewhere to confirm it as a fact.

We live in an age of photo and fact manipulation that has only gotten worse with the introduction of AI. You can't simply take a site, news or otherwise, as a stand alone source of information.

In time I think we will develop a 'natural distrust' to all information the same way we distrust what a random shady dude could tell us.

She's already sunk.  So she stopped sinking a long time ago.

I had a discussion with a co-worker. Back in the day, we could ignore those random shady guys, standing on the corner with signs. They were but one person, and really had no way of networking.
Then came the internet.
Suddenly that shady guy had the ability to connect and network with others, growing and spreading their ideas, making their views more prevalent in society.

At this point she is fairly stable, but I suspect we will soon enter the 'collapse' phase. Utah and Arizona have likely remained in this stable state due to their warship construction, being designed to take and withstand damage, but they can't remain forever.

You're correct.  Eventually the steel will turn to rust, and the rust will become so fragile that it will collapse like dust.

It was always so. Even before the internet, you had to consider what somebody says, who they are and why they say what they say or write. Then check alternate viewpoints and see how they compare.

And even before the internet, a lot of people would not bother, rather wanting the simplicity of Factual Truth  Without A Human Element from whatever source they stumbled on.

Even before internet there was gossip and hearsay... but internet amplify their reach to a global scale. The problem about internet is the sheer volume of trash ofuscates the valuable information.

I think the problem is more that it's ever-present, lots of folks get a constant feed of stupidity and lies through social media to which they're addicted to.

(PCU) = Pre-Commissioning Unit is a designation used by the United States Navy to describe vessels under construction prior to their official commissioning.

A new term for me, too!  Had to look it up 👀.

Sailors assigned to PCU are referred to as 'Plank Owners' and usually get at least a certificate as such.

Pre-Commissioning unit.

This is a Navy Billet. Usually, a navy sailor can choose a brand new ship.. One fresh out of the Naval construction yard, only when its time (for sea rotation) and there's billets available.

Once you're accepted into the billet (Billet means a space needed to run the ship or naval base or naval school), before the ship is even a NAVY SHIP... It has to go through a certain process of acceptance. Before this, the sailor will enter the Pre commissioning unit for the new ship. This includes the Officers AND the enlisted.

The only one authorized (other then the commander and chief), to accept a Brand  new ship into the Naval forces... Falls on the Chief Of Naval Operations (currently, Admiral Lisa Franchetti of NY).

There's usually a big ceremony called the Commissioning and christening. This is attended by the big boys..

  • Sec Nav
  • Sec DEF
  • Chief of naval operations

This is where the wine bottle is smashed on your hull and the men/women, man her stations to bring the dead ship to life.

This is also when the ship title is changed to USS (Name). Officially designating her as a United states Warship. Relinquishing its civilian designation.

Sailors in this Pr e-commisioning unit are given things like a unique hat with "plank owner" inscribed in the back. Plus other perks depending on the circumstances.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now, a decommissioning ceremony is the opposite and the sailors receive nothing and are wanting for a new ship employer.

They strip the ship of all things navy... Then the ship loses her USS designation and becomes only SS.

You're later than other people who answered the question.
But your answer was more thorough.  Thanks.  🙂

I hate to reference a movie that predicts the future.. But, THE RUNNING MAN is getting everything right about today's circumstances, its scary..

The movie was made back in the 1980's. Still a good watch, I can't dismiss it as fiction now.

there were alot of good movies made back in the 80s and early 90s I still enjoy today, sometimes because of the 'low budget' feel to the movies.

Running Man, Total Recall, Robocop, those original movies are classic and the remakes or mostly pale shadows of the original. I really missed the commercials in the remake of Robocop.
