Analysis – Tech has finally exceeded me with it's bureaucracy BS

I started in the old IBM 5150 age. I was a printer guy then in fixing them. I use to be one that was progressive in technology until now. I realize that some of you may not know what the heck I am talking about, but I will try to explain. To inform everyone, my TV/phone/internet services in the USA is with Verizon FIOS. I was pretty happy with the service.

Recently the FIOS system is being upgraded. My current TV top box equipment will stop working in March 2025. I know this because I get a splash screen notice that won't go away when I turn on the TV until I can order the new free upgrades now, not until 2025 year. A very strong arm move BTW Verizon. All the new equipment is free BTW minus the extra services.

However my point is with change, there comes some disorder. I have an old 2005 Samsung SD TV that my wife insisted we keep and use because at the time the TV was new. Why through out something brand new? My wife is happy with this TV. Happy wife, happy life. The bad thing about the TV is it weighs 150 lbs., it is a CRT TV, and a energy vampire. It still works BTW.

Now advance 20+ years and we have this media change of equipment. HDMI connection now comes into existence. So we need new gear to view TV. I already have one HD LED TV (2017) which is no problem with the newness. I found a fairly cheap 1080p 24” TV on Amazon as a replacement that will do the job for now.

However, in trying to find the TV specifications, owners manual, and setup guide is hard to find for an Amazon product. Add to the situation that Verizon does not want you to know their equipment either (no manuals). Everything is either QR or weak web link references with no answers. I feel like this during the replacement process.

 

BTW, you can purchase one for $4k.

I swear technology is forcing me away from using it because of their annoyances. The BS over it's bureaucracy is driving me away from it. I am already annoyed over were every business expects you to use a cell phone for them. I wonder if business cards are now QR codes too? It's getting to the point I don't want the cell phone anymore. I thought I was understanding or up to date with technology. Maybe it's me for the price of being old?

Getting detailed spec from Amazon or any other Box moving enterprise can be a real challenge. Something as simple as the VESA configuration on a TV can be completely missing from the seller's website page and only available if you do a search for the model number's manual via google. It may seem like a minor oversight but it can define what stand/mount you require for the TV to be placed where you want, similarly the distance between the legs of the included stands that TVs have is almost never available. This is kinda essential to know if it will fit on your existing furniture or if you are going to have to buy a VESA stand or mount... which you can only do if the VESA dimensions are available. I speak from experience of this very issue.

Yes, it's kind of strange when we supposedly live in the 'information age' that there are inadequacies with access to the kind of information that presented no issues at an earlier time when access to information was more limited than now.

I, for instance, have a Samsung display, and it proved relatively difficult to find any information about it even with the model number.

Ah, having a Toffler moment it seems....  Yep, like you I come from way back when it was "important" to support your products and "learning" was part of the product's paperwork.  They told you what you needed to know AND, there was a real human being to call, when you didn't.

I just went through this when Cox decided to swap out their original internet services for a Yahoo platform....  Ah, no........I don't want to do that...  So, off to the Cox store where the customer support staff looks at you as if you have Leprosy....  "it's so simple......."    and, there's nothing I can do to help you when something goes wrong or.......

The era of customer service and product responsibility are long gone mate.......

We are suffering from Adaptive Friction.  Where one generation simply accepts change and the older one simply does not want to change....  And, we can't communicate our angst to a generation that simply doesn't have the time to explain "something soooooooo simple....."   Welcome to Toffler's wave theory.

Update: Thank goodness there is one such US agency that is bureaucratic, the FCC. They have a database on anything that has to do with electronics. This is the source that I am looking for:

I was surprised that a Toshiba MQ01ABD100V 1 TB 5400 RPM SATA drive is being used instead of a SSD for the DVR. I guess they could not get the cost down for a SSD drive.

This helps me some.

SSDs won't be used for long term storage, spinning rust is still cheaper than SSDs per TB, and HDDs designed for DVR work have very long MTBF numbers.

 

e.g. a 12 TB HDD is about $220-250 whereas the equivalent SSD in terms of  capacity is over $2000

Wow, I haven't seen MTBF/MTBR used for a long time !  We have/had an entire FRACAS department considering our dispatch rates were at 98.9%....

Check brand and model of the equipment and go directly to the maker's page. It's exceedingly rare to not find the manuals and tech sheets in their web page, even obscure brands have their page and product catalog online.

You don't need to tell me... I work on an Alarms firm (like ADT), regular analogic (copper) telephone lines are being phased out this year and replaced by fiber-optic systems (that's VoIP). The problem is Alarm panel phone comms don't work over fiber-optic telephone lines... and we still have lots of clients using telephone comms (thats the cheapest option).  Now we are trying to 'upgrade' all our clients to IP or 4G/5G comms, but it involves buying new equipment... and there's also our old 2G clients needing to be 'upgraded' because 2G is also being phased out... 😫

I worked for a period of time in a QA/QC department calculating MTBF numbers for all sorts of equipment mostly in the Defence sector. Clansman radio, Sky Shadow, Blowpipe missiles and GraduATE testing systems.
