Verytis
Citadel is the most armoured part of a ship. Armour protects you by keeping bad things out. Conversely, this means armour is also good at keeping things inside. So when AP goes off inside a citadel, you have a really bad, confidedconfined explosion. This means the big explosive effect you see when hitting a citadel, doesn't actually make sense. Just like some of my teams Edited June 1 by Verytis confided -> confined

Just like some of my teams Should I confide in you the difference between the words "confide" and "confine"? 😉 I'm guessing it is just a typographical "oops". Anyway, if a ship's magazine is hit hard enough while it still has a lot of ammunition/gunpowder, I imagine the resulting detonation would be impressive. Possibly even spectacular if the hull is broken completely apart at the location of the magazine. But, a hit to an engine-room? I imagine the results would be more confined, as you described. Fuel may be ignited, and ruptured fuel lines may continue to leak fuel to feed a fire. I imagine propulsion would be diminished, due to the loss of the engine-room. Flooding may happen, depending upon the location of the hit and the subsequent size of the hole in the hull. While the observable effects of a main-gun projectile hit depend upon where exactly the particular projectile impacted the hull ... ... the observable effects also depend upon the size of the projectile and the size of the ship. Bigger projectiles have larger bursting-charges of explosive. And bigger ships have more hull (and thus more mass) to counteract the bursting-charge. That being said, battleship main-guns were designed to damage other battleships, and, on occasion, destroy them with one hit.

TimurGlazkov
If you want to see how ships take shells, try Ultimate Admiral Dreadnought. Hit at engine, hit at conning tower, hit at magazine, fire, flooding... damage are more detailed there, and you'd be surprised how many shells a capital ship can take before it succumbs to either flooding or structural failure. WoWs is an arcade, so i understand they just wanted to add a visual cue.
majmac
It is an arcade game based (loosely) on real-world happenings. Sheesh! Get over it and play on. 🤪
