I have to wonder.

I wasn't aware that the player chat was a legacy feature of online games.   Personally, I'm not affected by the chat box msgs. and so I don't have issues however, there is a big issue trying to get players to play better.  I'm suggesting the chat box, as currently designed, is not helping players get better.

I think that is called "Discord..."  But, many players don't want people to know their gender or age so.........they type away.

If Learning is the goal, someone talking you through an engagement is "how it's been done for centuries..."

I have to wonder how many players have battle chat turned off. I see way too many players ignoring chat and ignoring quick commands that really need to be responded to. Even if it is a warning, they are about to get their ship sunk. Then, when you look at these players, you see that most of them are not very good at the game. I do not understand why people play an MMO PVP game and refuse to be part of the MMO. Why not just play a single-player game? Maybe if they took the time to listen to better players, they would learn something.....

Been several threads like this lately. There are always going to be players who don’t care about being good at the game.  It’s been said already that most players just want to play shooty pew pew pixel boats.
It’s getting old that players are complaining about this. Let players play how they want. Sure, you’re going to loose some matches because of their bad play. You are also going to have some outstanding matches due to bad play on the other team as well.
Just stop and remember all the time YOU have eff’d up and cost your team the match.  We all have, no matter how good you think you are.
Real pro players will just take bad teammates with a grain of salt and move on. You’re not really that great anyways if you can’t accept the fact that this Freemeium game we all love is geared to the casual crowd.
Frankly, I’d rather play with casuals out to have fun rather than some try hards who think they are much better than they actually are.

I have mine turned off because I got sick of the infantile behavior. And the advice you say the better players try to give not so good players usually comes off as insults and whining like children in my experience. Definitely a better gaming experience for me when I don't have to be distracted by chat.

Many of us, turn it off;  because,  the toxic (that includes all of the varieties I won't name) behaviors on display.   I really can't say more than that.   I can say that I can't "promote this game" to home school parents because of "videogame toxicity"....  Which means, we aren't seeing all of those children/teenagers/young adults learning to play this game.  My own Grandson included.   He still has his account but........he is supervised and can only play PVE....

To make matters worse, we had a SWAT'ing several years ago.  So, if you don't think toxic chat is a serious thing, come out and talk to the Police and First Responders and Family of the person killed....

"Small things words are;  that, have and will always cause strife, conflict, loss and death..."

This statement popped up on my radar.  Are we hearing from these people who aren't on this devstrike discussion?  WG hears from these people via surveys, maybe.

Personally, I'm on a quest to find one person in real life who 1. Will spend time to discuss their computer experience with me. 2. Has heard of World of Warships. I'm five years into this quest.

I've been known to exchange playful banter with the opposing team and/or to discuss things not relevant to the battle we're in at the time.
For me, figuring out the humorous references that some people use in their in-game names is amusing and entertaining.
And that's merely one example.

I like the banter a bit too.  In my Dr Jekyll mode, when I find myself being the sole T8 ship in a T10 match, I'll come up in all chat and blame my red T8 counterpart for sucking me in to a T10 match.

In my Mr. Hyde mode, when I identify irrational behavior on behalf of a red player, I'll come up in all chat and ask the red team "What's up".  This is mischievous psych 101 in the game sense, and PsyOps in the military sense.  Nothing better to give one an edge in battle than to get the enemy arguing amongst themselves.

And of course there are those times when you can be a good sport and give a red play a "well played" in all chat when they actually do something that deserves it.

Me too.
It’s fun to poke the reds.

Usually gets a giggle.

Well that's one of the benefits of playing PVE ...

You can insult the enemy team and they are so awed by your command of language that they don't even TRY to respond. smileytongue.gif.fe902ab22717c1b5f4145a5a20d211c2.gif

It's too bad you can't dish out your insults using an outrageous French accent in chat. It's really too bad WoT removed general chat, the game lost a lot of the fun aspect with that one dumb decision.

Go to a University or College that sponsors NACE and talk to those students..  Or, as many of us have, close friends, professional friends and Family in the game.  You'll get an earful almost full-time from them when you FUBAR a Division's mission or your computer decides to disconnect in the middle of the evening's play !

Heh.  Funny you should mention that.  😉

Also, a couple of weekends ago I was fortunate enough to sail in @Ensign Cthulhu's division during his Twitch stream, and we started up a running joke about how we had "come here" to steal the bubble-gum from the 'Bots and then chew it in front of the next 'Bot team in the next game.  🙂

Someday the 'Bots are going to be able to respond to our witty banter, and they've had millions of clock-cycles to think of good material.  🙂

These are the only ways I know about.  The general public and graduates are not welcome on campuses unless they bring money.

Yeah.  I suppose you could offer an internship or research grant to accomplish your goals?
Not sure what your budget is, though.
Possibly you could become a participant in an already funded study that one of the students is doing research for?

The old fable of 'Peter and the Wolf' has been attempting to teach children why abusing an important part of communicating leads to it not being there when you need it.

Back many moons ago, there was only chat.  And many there were who used it as a weapon, an annoyance, to start political conversations or practice their singing careers.  It was not used to help the team win games, and so people learned to ignore the useless chatter and get on with fighting their ships.

Then came ship horns.  And many there were who used these as a weapon, an annoyance, or to toot their own horn.  It was not used to warn a teammate of a collision or danger, and so people learned to ignore the useless noises and get on with fighting their ships.

Then came F-Key commands.  And many there were who used these as a weapon, an annoyance, and to see little rings pop up on the minimap so everyone could see that they knew how to press a button.  It was not used to signal the team to important events on the battle space or request help, and so people learned to ignore the useless pings and automated chat messages and get on with fighting their ships.

I hope this is helpful in understanding why the situation is what it is, and I highly recommend reading of fables to enhance one's understanding of wisdom.

Ahhh...but that's the trick that WG pulled on everyone.  It isn't just -one- key but -many-, all arranged with a cunning positioning above the regular letters where they know players either don't look or are properly cautious to touch (the famous incident from 'The Hunt For Red November' where the player activated their ejection seat while their submarine was submerged and became a new form of torpedo decoy is always in the minds of those who spent countless hours of frustration discovering the key map on their own because the company omitted it from the game files).

Contact the University's student services and activities department.   I looked at the NACE list and they don't appear to be participating.

Take a look.  And, if not, email them and ask.......

Stop trying to confuse our readers with those arcane advanced concepts!  You know we are dealing with a playerbase who thinks crossing the T in a Battleship is how you win battles in this game...you want them to start poking around in the -settings- menu now??  I bet you'll be expecting them to be able to dodge torpedoes, next!

*Walks out of the room muttering about 'Back in my day....' to no one in particular *
