Merging of WoWS & WoWSL?

Just read a news item in-game explaining how World of Warships and World of Warships Legends (console game) are cross-sharing rewards.

This, to me, seems very much like participation numbers in both games are tanking.

WoWS should had been cross platform to begin with... at some point they oughta merge them as logic dictates.

No they aren't, just a thing to get more people to play both games more and more.

https://worldofwarships.com/en/news/sales-and-events/wows-pc-and-legends-stronger-together/

So this caught my eye:

IN WORLD OF WARSHIPS: LEGENDS, YOU WILL RECEIVE:

Upon joining the program:
  • f32a5c3a-6f5a-11ee-b22f-ac162d70f4e4.png7 days of Premium Account
  • Tier II Japanese Premium battleshippremium_1d0cabf1997104fd727039ab9c098192Mikasa
  • Tier III American cruiserstandard_44b68c918edc534e1367cb6512e9e8cPhoenix

Last time I checked, Mikasa was a tier II premium cruiser in Legends, not a battleship.

There are several point in the news that need further clarify:

  • WG seems to mess up with Primary and Secondary account
  • The compensation for T5 Hill (Its a coal boat)
  • The deadline for the event

I would say it is a dumb idea to put up such event towards Christmas patch. People will be busy grinding through snowflake and Christmas mission they probably won't have much time for the mobile version. Moreover, I don't think there will be a good result for two grindy game fighting over the same bunch of player

Then I wonder why they made it a limited event, instead of a reoccurring set of missions.

From the article it clearly states that after 61 battles, there's nothing more to be had. So a player can play 61 battles in the secondary game, and then forget it completely.

One would assume, that if WG wanted a long term crossplay, they would create a system where the players would be incentivized to play the secondary game again after the initial period.

So people fear missing out on the free stuff

It would appear the hope is that after being incentivized to try the other game, people would continue to play it based on its own merits.

I find this approach to be questionable because I have a hard time imaging many players would desire to continue playing both games regularly vs. just the one that better scratches their itch for a naval combat game, but maybe I’m wrong and there are lots of people out there with that much time on their hands.

I would say a more likely outcome would be that some players of one game simply switch over to playing the other as a result of this program.

They could have had both. Create a time limited "initial offering" with FOMO, and then follow up with monthly missions.

Poaching your own customer base. That would truly be a classic WeGee strategy.

They would need major changes to both games to be compatible.  Legend botes are generally a tier below the WOWS PC botes.

Ex: The Texas, Tier 4 in Legends & 5 on PC.   The games just aren't close to the same.

I guess I'll sign up as a Primary Legends player because I don't think I could stand playing 61 games of Legends for the rewards.  I think I've played almost 61 games of Legends since Beta Testing began. (it always makes me feels like I'm playing in a bathtub)

Well, the player count numbers for WoWs PC are dropping steadily, made clear in the publicly available data (stats.wotapi.ru)

As for the other half of the story, there are no statistics available for WoWs Legends.

And as others have mentioned, this promotion is likely to be fairly ineffective for a number of reasons:

  • There are people who already play both games
  • There will be cannibalization in that some who exclusively play WoWs PC switch to Legends, or vice-versa
  • The "core" audiences for each game are quite distinctive demographically and unwilling to switch regardless of any incentives offered.
WoWs PC has an older player base (lots of Boomers here) so unlikely to own an Xbox or Playstation.
WoWs Legends has young people used to the mobile gaming environment. for them computers are mostly for work, leaving recreation to phones, consoles, etc.

They are trying to get the whales in each game to re-buy all the same content on another platform.

Reeks of desperation.

I expect they will soon unveil a paid subscription.

In the past 30 days they have tried to sell us:

Coffee

$500 coffee table books

T-shirts

3D Printers

GoPros

and now

Play the same game again! (and re-buy everything again)!

Um, why would I want to play a crappy chinese knock off looking version of WoWs?  Consoles are for plebs.  Smile_trollface.gif.1bddd7d4c71d2a180663758f7d679c62.gif

Silliness aside, seriously, why would I want spend time on a heavily watered down version of WoWs?  I am a CBT, will I be retroactively compensated as such on Legends (basically it would as if I had played Legends since their CBT).

Spoiler

Spoiler: They won't.

So yeah, don't care.

impossible WG maintained for ages that WOWS and WOWL are 2 completely sepearate games with nothing in common or any resource sharing and that CV rework had nothing to do with making them more "console transferable" in their playstyle, were we mislead by WG? i am shocked, schoked I say...

Whereas Mir Korabli (WoWs RU) and WoWs share a LOT more similarities than differences and could potentially be reintegrated at some point in time (unknown timeframe), WoWs Legends and WoWs are decidedly different in their approaches and even their mechanics (Commanders are handled completely differently, for example). So no, I don't see a merger of WoWs Legends and WoWs PC ever becoming a thing.

Hey now, show some respect 😜 Legends actually did California, Oklahoma AND Kansas JUSTICE. Actually, their balancing is better overall. Their Commander system is pretty nice too. Brawling is easier to initiate too. So yes, I will watch their career with great interest!

Could you expand on how commanders work in Legends? What makes them different from the PC version?

Sure can!

This is an example of a commander ingame (AL New Jersey from the Azur Lane Wave 4 for Legends). Note the very different style of picking skills. also, please note the top left two small boxes. Inspirations allow you to use other commanders "Base Traits" to modify the performance of your commander! You want dispersion buffs AND secondary performance modifiers? You could technically do so by adding in AL Haruna and Von Hipper's "base traits" which will buff your secondary power, all while enjoying the benefits of an "Accuracy" commander such as New Jersey. There are many different commanders as well, this is only a small example 🙂

Thanks for the info, this is very different indeed ... I actually wouldn't mind seeing a rework like this on the PC version.

Yep, it's actually pretty nice. You can even use, say, a Brawler Battleship commander on a large cruiser like Sigfried or Agir, and boost her secondaries that way... 👀

Or if you want, you can actually build into AA on ships (yes, WoWs Legends actually has AA Range mods).

I wouldn't really call it desperate to throw some random crap at players to try another game they make. Cross-marketing like that is common enough and often involves games with even less in common.

Now if they had offered players a T9 premium to play legends then I'd say it was desperation hehehe.

Seriously though it is a pretty cheap reward set that might result in a few players picking up the second game as well. I mean it was so cheap they don't even give compensation if you already own the Hill.
